DIY MaxiJet Stream (Pic Intense)

Well they do run in reverse I received the new props that have a stop cut into them & that by its self does not work. Unfortunately it looks as though Matt (lutz493) does not wish to be bothered. Even his screen name says moved on.

Personally I don't see how the propeller can be prevented from reverse spinning if it doesn't have some sort of stopper or brakes (like the Tunze) so to speak. The stopper would have to be on the housing itself not the propeller otherwise I don't see how this would work.

I got his mod. He has the stopper machined into the top of the prop. It doesnt look like much is there, but it works great. Its hard to explain without pics, but its rather ingenious. Its just to bad the props dont produce much flow compared to the boat props.

Yeah I wondered about that. It seems to me the mod would have been better if actual boat propellers were used instead. Probably would have been easier to make as well as quieter and generate more flow.

What do you figure Lutz's mod puts out in terms of flow as compared to say a dual nitro on a MJ900 or MJ1200? I know I'm getting around 1800gph or so with the dual nitro and much more with the larger 1.75" Dumas.

Matt, I can't email you,Because yahoo says it can't find your server. This happens to me all the time. I want to order 3 of your (B) impellor kits, and pay with pay pal. Please send me info on how to do this. Ted

Once again guys. This is the exact reason why Lutz was booted from RC. If you need to contact him do through direct email rather than posting on this thread. Please don't post anymore of these or soon the mods will close the entire thread as well.

dhnguyen is 110% right...

I made my own diy mod using double nitro impellors and also have one of lutz493s mods. I wanted to try the lutz mod mainly because I want the motorized unit that is going to be available for it in the next month. He told me his mod for the 1200 will run at 1600 gph making it comparable to the tunze6060. I read people on here saying they are getting 1800 gph or higher form using the double nitros. When I had both pumps in my tank i personally thought the lutz mod was stronger then my nitros. I decided to do my own tests on these to see which one was performing better. I originally used a 1 gallon bag and each pump took approx 2 seconds to fill. The problem I found with using a 1 gallon bag is that if you are off by even Ã"šÃ‚¼-1/2 second in testing the results of the test changed greatly. If the bag took exactly 2 seconds to fill it would be 1800 gph but if it is actually taking 2 Ã"šÃ‚½ seconds then the results would be 1440 gph. I ended up taking a 2.5 gallon bag and slicing it down the top seam which made it a 4 gallon bag after filling it up with a 1 gallon milk jug. I tested my double nitro mod and my lutz mod this way 8 times each with my roommate using a stop watch to time it. My results were that it took my lutz mod 9 seconds each time to fill the bag and that it took my diy dual nitros 10-11 seconds each time to fill the bag. The lutz mod seems to be running true at 1600 gph on a mj1200 and my diy nitros are running probably somewhere between 1400-1500 gph. I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t think that my fish or corals care which one of these are in the tank. If the motor unit for the lutz493 mod is as good as it sounds then I will probably take my diy mod out and use 2 motorized units. My only real question is that the impellor that I received seems to be cut down from the one in the picture. I was told that it was cut down so that it would turn over in the pump and that a new nylon impellor that was being made should not have to be cut back. With the pictured impellor having so much more surface area then the cut back one I got I wonder how much more water it will move above the 1600 it is now?

Well don't forget the housing plays a very large part in maximizing the flow in these mods. If there's one thing I've learned is that no 2 mods from 2 people are the same. One mod using double nitros could have higher or lower flow rate depending on the length of the housing, the size and number of inlet slots or holes, even where the propellers and inlet slots are situated.

I'm gonna invest in a watt meter myself here soon and measure the power draw of these things as well as come up with a better way to accurately test the flow rate.

By the way... If you want to see some serious flow, put on a 1.75" Dumas propeller instead. That thing actually knocked over some stuff in my tank when it turned on.

Your mod seems to be the best interms of diy so I copied your design even the guard so I know it would work the first time I made it. You said you were using a 1 gal bag and got approx 2 seconds perhaps you were just off a little like I said it will make a big difference. I bet those 1.75 dumas are pretty amazing, hopefully you will beable to do some accurate testing on those for us to all see. For my 75 mixed reef everything looks pretty happy with the 2 power heads I have in there now, I couldnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t imagine having more flow. I guess if it is knocking stuff over whats the point of having it? Hopefully when I get my dream tank Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll be able to actually benefit from the kinda flow your talking about with the dumas props. God knows what kinda stuff will be available when Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m finally able to do that :)

actually I tried testing it first with a 1 gallon bag and it was way too difficult to time it. The bag would fill up faster than I can watch the second hand tick.

The subsequent tests were done on a 2 gallon bag and timed for 2 seconds. I then measured how much water was in said bag.

Yeah but you know I just gotta know how far I can push the Maxijet to perform. I would never use sucha large propeller in my tank, my fish would forever hate me for it

I'm going to order some Octura propellers to try out as well and these have even more aggressive picthing than the nitros. I'll let you guys know how that turns out.

Lutz has left the building,
I thought he was going to show them off at this years c-sea swap. But I guess not I didn't see any anywhere.

Its been about 50 days now and your Mod is still working great and super quiet!
Well done.

Lutz is no longer a member of RC, at least not in a form I am familiar with. He has also had some personal problems crop up, apparently his pregnant wife has been put on bed rest, so he is working at his 9-5, plus his startup, plus taking care of his son, who I think is around 12 months.

I am not making excuses for him, just wanted to let anyone who wondered where he was, know. If you dont have his contact info, please PM me, & I will send you his email.

The test caps I am using fits so tight ,that I can't rotate it to lock it in. Do you have to sand the inside to remove some material . Ted
