It would be magnesium carbonate if that is how it is used. :)

Randy,
Any suggestions on where to get the above? My supplier for other chemicals doesn't carry it.
Thanks,
Joe

I talk to him and he is more than willing to ship 1 50lb bag or a hundred whatever you want. it cost me $39 and some change shipped to my house near tampa florida.

What brand is it? Not all brands of magnesium chloride will be suitable. The only one that I know is is the one from Dead Sea Works, based on their purity data.

Not off hand. Home Depot may even sell a suitable product in the lawn lime section (they do have dolomite there), but I've not tested any for purity.

I just placed my order. I was told that Al was on vacation right now - I wonder if there was confusion about which Al. But I spoke with Jere who was very helpful. He wasn't able to finalize the order because the guy who handles the UPS shipping pricing had already left for the day. Jere will be giving me a call back tomorrow morning and I'll let you know how it goes.

He did confirm that this was from the Dead Sea as opposed to the Great Salt Lake. I'm not sure if this is the exact same product that the Boston club ordered but I'm getting some just the same.

If you're in the Orlando area and want to pick some up in Oviedo I'll be willing to split the cost on some of it.

Here is an image from their website with the flake bag

What I'm looking closely at is that they sell a case of 8 jugs that are 4 lbs each of the flake. That would be a lot handier than a 50 lbs bag.

FYI

The picture of the bag on the web site of Mag Pellets is not the same as the bag of Mag from Dead Sea. The Dead Sea product is a flake and states product of Israel.

It is real possible that the pics are out of date since parts of the website includes products that they no longer carry (including the 50 lbs box of MgCl2).

Hobster or Randy, can you post a pic or provide some detail of the bag from the product from Dead Sea Works that the Boston club researched?

Thanks,
Paul

The bag above is not the one that I have (I was at work so couldn't recall exactly). It is a white bag with a big dark blue square in the middle on botrh sides that says "magneisum chloride" in several languages.

At the bottom in large blue letters it says Dead Sea Works, LTD.

al was what he said his name was but I was on a cell phone trying to make a commercial going huh? whomever the guy is that left is who I talked to I am sure.
like i said he was very knowledgeable about his products and recommended the pellet for longer storage time since it does't react to humidity as bad as the flake. it acts in a bad way turning to gel just not as fast.
that is the same bag as the dead sea works website it may be new packaging from the last order.
randy if you want to analize it I will send you a lb or so.

I tried the dolomite route but from what I've been told by my aquarium suppliers that they no longer bag up dolomite like they used to, and the only dolomite I could find was the Estes and they coat it with some sort of clear coat product. This thread has rekindled my search, it certainly seems like a good idea to keep Mg levels up in, especially in a big system.

I also get the Dead Sea Mg, and the packaging is the same as
"It is a white bag with a big dark blue square in the middle on botrh sides that says "magneisum chloride" in several languages".
Thanks,
Joe

Yes, although it may take a while to get a good balance of MgCO3 and CaCO3. :)

actually now that i looked for the pic I found it on meltsnow.com were they say they order direct from dead sea works in isreal. next to that they have a picture as shown above. Hopefully it is what we thought we were ordering maybe everyone else should hold off on ordering until I get the product and check to see what the bag says. if it doesn't say I will contact whomever's name is on the bag and look for more info.

Randy,

robthorn might be on to something good here! These folks are right in your area. Their website states import from Dead Sea. Could it be that it is really the same product that you guys got in a different bag??? They appear to be the major importer (22 tons!) and then wholesale to other places. How did Greg get the detailed product specification sheet on your group buy, is there a way to get one from this company?

I just received pricing on 50 lbs bags:

Magnesium Chloride $16.42
Calcium Chloride (Peladow) $17.69

They also carry Dowflake.

Shipping via UPS to Orlando, FL is $25.24 per bag.

He did reconfirm that the magnesium chloride is from Dead Sea Works. Whether it is a different grade, same product repackaged, or if the pic on the website is old and it is or is not what the Boston club ordered remains to be seen.

I've gone ahead a placed an order.

I think you paid $39 and some change shipped. This is $41.66. So, $2 or so isn't too bad.

The sales guy is Jere. I don't know the name of the person who calculated the shipping.
