Ready for primer and paint, then stick on the top and caulk, prime, and paint it.

I just purchased a used tank. It's ~45g and measure 25x25". I would like to build the stand using either 1x2's (preferable) or 1x3's, and then skin the stand with 1/8" Oak. The stand will be ~30" tall.

Is there any cause for concern with stability going this route?

did you have to buy a special drill bit to make those holes josephlb? whats it called and how much did it run you? looks great btw. :)

Josephlb, looks good. I would however have concern for the way you have the verticals attached with only a few toe nailed screws. When the tank is on the stand with full weight and someone bumped into the stand I would be afraid that the screws would not be suficient to hold all the weight\deflection in place... just my thoughts.

Rocket,

What do you think about this stand? I will be using 2x4s only and 3/4 plywood for the top and bottom.
It's a 150gal tank 5'x2'x2'

i have an oceanic 50 w/ stand that i was gonna use w/ my build, but after looking over this thread, i'm considering building my own tank & stand

OK....34 pages later and I think I am ready! Plan are to start this Sunday! Wish me luck and pics to follow!

Marlon, that design is plenty sufficient. The one thing you need to change though is the way the joints are made up. The corner posts should sit on top of the bottom band just like the center posts do. That will distribute the weight of the stand/tank over the floor instead of having that single point of pressure on the floor.

I'm wondering if there is any need to have any stringers on the bottom frame? My stand will be 84" long....(x36" high and 24" deep).

Hello everyone,

I've read this thread several times over the last year or so, as I prepared for my tank upgrade. I'm playing with Sketchup now, trying to come up with a good plan, and here's where I've ended up:

The tank will measure 94" x 30" x 30". The plan is to construct the stand out of 2x4s and skin it with 3/4in plywood. Only the dark purple verticals are 2x6s. I only did that because I have some 2x6 laying around and figured on using it. The stand is 105"x30x30. The vertical uprights are spaced ~29" on center.

I'm plumbing everything to the basement, so I don't need much head room under the tank. I'm still playing the the final look, so that is why the skinned pic has a bunch of holes in it. I figured now is a good time to hear your critiques. If all goes well, I hope to build the frame in the next week or so.

Enjoy...

If i want to build a stand that can support a 55g and a 75g does anybody know any reason why if i just added another 48 inch cross beam 3 inches inside the back beam. (so i would have 48' cross beam in front, 48' cross beam 18 inches from front and 48' cross beam 21' from the front, would i need to add legs under the cross beam that is 18' from the front too? i tried to build a sketch on the computer to show you but i couldn't figure it out.

So you're saying...

The 75 gallon would be on the front cross beam and back cross beam,
The 55 gallon would be on the front cross beam and middle cross beam?
