Heck, let's just plumb them all together ;) We can start on the West Coast :D

We already have one of those. It is called the ocean. It works wonders on our reefs. We just have to figure out something smaller that is still affordable. ;)

Yeah....our eternal struggle to alter, mimic and manipulate nature.

Marc...you only need that much if you're not going to be recirculating.

Adnup,

I'll get back to you on that since I'm a work now, but it must be around 5" or so since I have to cut it to fit inside the 4" pvc pipe.

thanks,

adnup- I had a box of spares...they measure 5" OD. If i can make a suggestion... if and when you cut it make sure you make the new OD slightly larger than the ID of your reactor as it is surprising how much "lift" your circlulating pump can have. My first attempt was JUST a little to small and yup, the darn thing lifted and let media get by....for what's worth.

Ok, 6 days and nothing. My nitrates are still off the charts :( .
I'm going to be patient though since mine were so high (around 100 :eek2: ) I have another water change scheduled for this weekend so I'll see what they read after that.

So am I the only one running nearly 500-750ml/minute through my chamber?

When I run slower, I get a sulfur odor. I only have 4L of media! I have less then 1ppm in the system still and have been feeding my tank more then ever. The effluent ph is 7.5 and the tank is 8-8.2ph (down from 8.1-8.3). My alkalinity creeps out of balance by about 1-0.5dkh every week or so resulting in the addition of about 1-2oz of baking soda weekly.

Paul Your right....it can be very fusltraing, I'm having the same issue(s). When you say off the charts..how high and what kit are using ????(to find how high you could run a sample diluted with distilled or ro/di water, say 10cc to 190cc for a 200cc total, a 5% sample then results x 20= nitrates) and have you measured for Nitites?? Just some thoughts.

they are at 80-100

you have to slow the drip rate down untill you get 0 out of the reactor.. it wont lower them if you have it going through this fast.... then it will start to lower the tank nitrate.

Zachtos...it is possible to go that high. I would just be careful about pushing the limit and turning you sulfur reactor into an aerobic chamber.

It was tested by Marc Langout that he was able to run the flow 5 times faster per liter of media per hour so you are well within that level, just keep an eye on it and glad to see it is working fine for you :)

Paul, feel free to call me and we'll get this going. It is easier for me since I'm not always in front of the pc.

You have PM with my number.

Great thread! I love DIY stuff. Just starting a 100g. tank so when the need arises Ill be making one of these.

One idea that crossed my mind was to add a pressure relief valve, say something like 10-15psi, at the top. That way you would have one less thing to think about...adds to the cost, but not much and its peace of mind. Just thinkin.

Mine is working great!! I have zero nitrates coming out of the reactor, and no nitrites. This works!! I am currently running about 1 1/2 drops a second, and my tank nitrates are getting lighter. I also voted for this thread to be thread of the month. Thanks so much djfrankie!!!

Thanks for your support and glad to see you knocking the nitrates down!

Thanks for the reply's. I need 6" diameter any ideas where I can get that or what you think I should use

I found some at Aquatic Eco but seems pricey for the amount I need.

I built the sulfur reactor just about a month ago and this coming Sunday it will be up and running 4 weeks. I bleed the air once a day and i have the drip rate at about 1 drip per second. As of last Sunday, the nitrates tested from the effluent were still WAY high. I know sometimes when the nitrates have been high for a long time, it may take longer than a week for them to come down, but a full month (i'm anticipating this Sunday's test will show no change)?? The sulfur media i am using is the stuff from the company that makes the ARM and the chamber is filled about 2/3 sulfur, then a filter pad divider and then about 1/3 arm on top. Should i try the stuff they sell at Premium Aquatics or should i just continue to be patient?? I'm honestly about to give up all together - possibly with the reef-keeping hobby - I'm SOOOOO frustrated! It seems that things that work for other people NEVER work for me. The only thing working is the rowaphos run thru 3 phosban reactors (probably overkill) are helping to keep my algae somewhat under control.
