DIY Sulfur Denitrator

thanks again TMZ.

i did fil up reactor before starting MJ

i came back from LFS and water was coming out at base of degauss valve(i didnt use teflon tape as i didnt think it needed to be that secure)

do i need to valve the aqualifter feed line.i have a feeling that i have too much water going in and only the drop a second comming out.

sorry.didnt mean to word it like that.

do i need to valve between aqualifter-output and reactor-input?

I have a valve on the input line and a powerhead with more push than the aqualifter. I have never had to close the valve. I beleive the pressurization helps the the reactor perform at a steady oputput and moves the gas up more quickly.

The valve is built into the reactor input port . It's a jg fitting. You could put it anywhere on the input line but probably don't need it.

I don't do anything with ph. The denitrator effluent is about 6.9. My system with calcium reactor effluent(6.7 ph) the denitrator effluent(6.9 ph) and limewater(12.4ph) dosing runs at 8.2 low and 8.35 high daily.
I dial up the reactor in daily or every other day increments when I get 0 to 5ppm NO3 effluent. I may have to increase limewater dosing or run a second canister with argonite as the denitrator output increases.

the input port on the 'cpvc' tee on pump loop?

im sorry,i need to word things better.not pH,i meant powerhead, what model are you using?

Yes on the tee. I used a valve fitting instead of a valvless one. Again I haven't had to use it. You could just use a barbed valve anywhere in the input tubing. I run 3 litres of sulfur because of the size of my system so I thought I wanted the ability to dial back a larger pump than the aqualifter if needed. After playing around with it I now just keep it open. I am using an old aquaclear 305 powerhead I had handy for a supply pump and a maxi jet 1200 for ricirculation.

This might sound stupid, but, do you need an extra pump, other than the MJ to drive water into the denitrator?

How much flow are you putting through your reactor now IBASSFISH? I tend to take my off line completely once my nitrates are down to zero. I would like to leave it running but I put about 1.5-2 LPH through the reactor and if there is nothing significant to process it seems like overkill.

I HAVE GAS!

I HAVE GAS!

Doing the happy dance, the reactor is finally breaking in. Nitrites are down to <.25 and I had a good bit of gas buildup this afternoon.

W00T!

I am not sure of the amount going through it, but its a steady stream. Some times I even leave the gas valve open (my valve is submerged in my sump also). It has not seemed to matter much.

I have alot of fish and it allows me to feed them heavier in my opinion.

Could have sworn i just posted this... anyway

I'm finishing up my PVC reactor tonight, got the holes drilled and tapped this morning. I will get some pictures.

The caribsea sulfur media is cheaper than the midwest, and also claims to be preseeded. Anyone using it? Can be found at premium aquatics.

That's what I got, and if you've followed my build it took about 5 weeks to break in. I also dosed NBC#9 (4 times). I think the media is ok, but the stuff from midwest starts quicker. Probably no big deal if you are at 5-10PPM, but for me at well over 60 it was an issue.

My reactor is coming up on its one year birthday!! Here is the link from a year ago:

I have not broke it down opened it up or anything since I installed it and my nitrates are still at zero!! Probably the best thing I have ever done for my tank.

IBASSFSH.....

I do remember you from wayyyyyyyyyyy back. You and I are some of the first to follow dJ down this path..

Quick ??? how do you maintain ALK and pH running continuously I never could those two even when dosing 2 part....my unit(s) are off to the side in "standby mode" have been disconnected for 3 mos....... Nitrates.. NOT ZERO..., but close enough @ 1 to 3 PPM.........you thoughts!!

I used theCarrib Sea LSM. It took about a week to cycle without adding anything. It's been running since 01/08 and It now pushes out 250ml of near 0 nitrate water per minute ,15 litres per hour . I have 3 litres of sulfur in it and it is running on a 575 galloon system with input water at about 40ppm nitrate.

Alright, another question. Can I just have the output come out of the top of the unit, and therefore avoid degassing the unit? One less hole to drill in this pipe. I can't imagine much gas is being released, and once it's diluted in the tank, all that, etc. Gas rises and all that, so the bubbles wouldnt really be making it back into the tank, and any that makes it back should be offgassed between water movement and skimming. My only concern would be if the flow was slow enough that the bubbles clogged the outflow but I dont think that would happen.
