DIY sump question

So I plan on upgrading my sump from the 20ish gallon one I bought off a friend to a 40 gallon breeder tank. My question may seem obvious but I have never done it do I am not sure.

Where my overflows hit the sump, I have filter socks. My plumbing does not physically go underwater in to the socks. It just splashes down. It is loud. It is messy if I do not position sock carefully.

Should I be running these pipes into the water/underwater?? does that make sense?

I used a combination of pvc pipe and flex tubing for mine..I have been told though by a plumper not to use the vinyl tubing because it can leach pcbs, not sure how much truth there is in that..

you can extend the pipes into the water to reduce the noise. I would go just below the surface. I run a bean animal overflow so my drains are submerged. The water then overflows onto an elevated section of acrylic with 2 4" socks there. This makes for easy changing of the socks.I have almost no splashing and virtually no salt creep in my system as a benefit.

Not much truth to that at all....better bet is spa-flex, but that is pvc and then we get the half truths and myths about BPA, and other odds and ends....face it, nothing is safe anymore.... :deadhorse:
