DIY Waterproofing

Hey guys,

I am going to flying to Jacksonville, Fl tomorrow, and realized the forecast is going to be windy and rainy. I emailed a few local places and am waiting for responses to see if they have anything that would just protect my camera from the elements. If nobody has any products, I was curious as if there were any good DIY ways. Even if it is just rubberbanding part of a trash bag around the body and the lens that would be fine. I would rather not leave my camera at home...

Thanks guys,
Brett

A plastic bag works just fine. The camera can actually handle a fair amount of light spray without any issue. What you want to protect, is openings; battery door, memory card slot, cable connections.

I shoot in the rain all the time.

I find a 1 gallon ziplock bag works great provided I have a short lens on. Eventually I'll get around to actually making my own rain sleeve out of a rain coat and some draw strings and a little bit of time on the sewing machine. :D

Like Doug, I shoot in the rain all the time. You don't say what body you use, but most of the pro bodies can handle a bit of rain pretty well. I do keep it under a jacket if it's coming down hard, but normally I don't worry too much.

Sorry, I will be shooting with a Nikon D40, and mostly using my Sigma 70-300mm since it will be at a sporting even... hope this helps.

What it sounds like is, I can put the body in a plastic bag, to prevent the openings from being wet and just use the lens hood to keep the lens dry of rain spots??

Yeah, that'll work fine.

I actually own a "storm jacket" from Vertex media and it's the most serviceable camera cover I've come across to this point. That said, most of the time I just use an umbrella or a plastic bag.

Thanks for the advice guys! I really appreciate... About time to head to the airport, hopefully I will post some good pics of the game when I get back!!

Well the Ziploc baggy worked alright!! It only rained for the tailgate and through the first quarter... Here are some pics from the game

Sorry, this was handheld... Didn't bring a tripod with me on the trip...

Haha, well shoot, I could do that with my camera too... As long as I didn't have to prove that it still worked afterwords... you know like they did.
