Do clownfish jump?

small alien

The fungus is among us.
Greetings friends. I have a pair of naked ocellaris. Half the tank is uncovered. Is this too risky? Do they jump very often? Thanks, small

They can jump out,but most of the time it is caused by another fish chaseing it or gets scared from sudden movment near the tank. hth

Thanks.

So, do folks commonly keep clowns in uncovered tanks or is that a for sure no no. I know there are fish (wrasses, firefish, etc.) that are definate jumpers. Where do clowns fall on the scale?

Thanks, small

I had a maroon that jumped 3 times when changing water, I think it just hated me. They can be startled when the lights switch off too. I would keep the tank covered why take the chance, if you loose one you'll be sick.

I breed maroons and percs and have the noticed (so far) the maroons will jump when I catch them or if they get startled. So there is a chance your fish will jump.

I've been keeping clownfish for over 6 yrs. with an open top and haven't had 1 jump yet. I had a chromis and a lawnmower blennie jump though.

The LFS has a display tank w/ a pair of perc clowns; they have been in there for atleast 3 years. Sunday night one of the pair jumped. Most likely the powder blue tang went after it, but since no one saw what happened, we'll never know for sure. But a real shame. So jumping is a possibility.

Thanks so much, everyone. It's so much easier to feed with no top as I don't have to take off the light fixture. But I would be sick if I lost one of my lovely little clowns. I'm thinking I'll put the top back on. Helps with evaporation too. Thanks again. Best, the small one

Yes they do. Sometimes after many years.... all of a sudden..... :(

They are not as bad as Anthias for jumping.

OK theis is a little off the topic but one time we stopped into a LFS in the south burbs. We were walking past a display w/open top tanks and a 6 line wrasse jumped out, my husband caught it. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life. My husband standing there with this fish in his hand.
Well OK wrasses are notorious jumpers but the bottom line is cover your tanks, my husband can't be everywhere. LOL

That's a great story, Lmecher! Thanks for sharing. I've covered the tank. Do your mini-carpets host your clown fish? I assume you mean anemones, not rugs!

We put a pair of percs in our tank 3 years ago. Had one jump so we got another. Couple weeks later, one jumped again so we got another. these 2 have stayed in the tank so far

With one exception. One night I went to turn off the light. As I did one jumped out onto the couch. Picked him up and put him back in. Been fine since :knocks on wood:

Yes, mini carpet anemones and no, they don't host clowns sadly. It would be cool if my clowns hosted a large rock covered with them. I just added a pair of ocellaris to my mini tank we'll see, I am not really hopeful. I never considered them hosting them until it the question was asked. : )
