Do clownfish jump?

We put a pair of percs in our tank 3 years ago. Had one jump so we got another. Couple weeks later, one jumped again so we got another. these 2 have stayed in the tank so far

With one exception. One night I went to turn off the light. As I did one jumped out onto the couch. Picked him up and put him back in. Been fine since :knocks on wood:

Maybe he just wanted to kick back and watch some TV. : )

(pair was still in bickering phase) i had one jump one night and hit the top of my hood in my biocube and it knocked itself out. it layed on the bottom for awhile -but the next morning was fine *sigh of releif. one of mine is always near the top of the water so when i went topless with my tank for a new mh light i fit egg crate on to the top. so now no worries. he splashed the other night so im glad i covered it.

Over many years I've had clarks, occs, and maroons w/ open top no prob.
But my last maroon did fly out of tank trying to bite me!
But that was a freak deal, and she didn't like me close to her nem.

I thjnk that, for all practical purposes, the answer to my question is a resounding "YES!". I'm glad I asked. I just got my two clowns a few weeks ago. I never really considered keeping them but these two little nakeds really charmed me. I'm looking forward to watching them grow and become a pair (hopefully!). Thanks everyone.

After 11 years, my ocellaris clown pair never jumped out of an open topped tank.

My female clownfish recently made an amazing 12 inch jump from one tank to another. I think her motivation was to get back into her anemone. Luckily, she has pretty good aim and she is fine. So yes, clownfish are capable of jumping.....possibly as a form of problem solving.

Wow that's quite a leap. I've seen Koi jump from one tank to another. I've also had my clowns jump between my growout tanks.

Two stories:

1) I had two tomato clowns for awhile. One day I didn't see the bigger one anymore and thought it died and was eaten by worms.

I was wrong.

I was cleaning up the wires years later and I found a petrified tomato clown!

2) Another time I had a maroon clown for a few years and went away to college and was not to be able to find it when I got back. I thought it died.

Again I was wrong.

It stuck itself in a C-siphon continuous overflow and was stuck there with all of its fins ripped off. I put him back in the tank and he was fine a few months later when he grew his fins back. Must have been a prisoner for two months!

I had a juvenileclown jump through egg crate during the night. I understand the allure of open tanks, but you can get most of the benefits of an open tank without the risk by installing a removable cover made of mesh and a window screen kit. There are many threads devoted to the details of making this kind of cover here on RC.

I guess I have been lucky: none of my clowns has ever jumped out of my open-topped tank. :) Wow there are some cool/weird/sad stories though.

Ive had a clarkii for about a year. one night when i was sleeping i heard a large splash followed by a thump. at first i thought it was electrical, i sprung awake out of bed, turned on the light, and there on my floor was the fish. i threw her back in the tank and shes doing great to this day. I now have a canopy on the tank however. Also she was the dominant fish, or animal for that matter in the tank.. so i have no clue what caused her jump.

I realize this is an old thread, but I just wanted to chime in because my Occelaris female just did a 2 foot leap towards my face and landed on the ground when I opened the lid to my nano cube. They normally hide in the rocks, and I didn't think they would jump, but I guess there's a first for everything.

I just had a Picasso Clown jump out. Luckily, I was home at the time and scooped him up and put him back in the tank. I had kept the front of the tank uncovered. Well, that is the end of that...

Just had a smaller mocha make it through egg crate and turn into leather overnight a few weeks ago, I now use a mesh on top of the tank now....and I also get better light too.

Old thread I know but I wanted to post that my 6 month nemo clown jumped out last night
I never had that tank covered
Heartbreaking
