Do Hairy Mushes use chemical warfare?

Just wondering. I got two of those hairy mushrooms with the blue tips, they are much bigger than I thought they would be and I attached them near a coral which keep looking withdrawn. They are not touching but they are probably about 4 to 5 inches apart. Do the hairy shrooms fight chemically as well as by touch?

Pictures, we need pictures of blue tipped hairy mushrooms.

If they are not touching they should be fine. Almost all softies and LPS do release chemicals into the water. If you are going to keep a lot of them you should definitely filter with carbon, but I doubt that is your issue here. What is the other coral, is there a chance that when they are both fully extended they could touch? It only takes once to send a sensitive coral into hiding.

Sorry for the delay in responding -- had to climb on planes for 24 hours so you will have to wait for pic's until I get home!

The other coral is a Caribbean coral with a name I have to put in my address book because I can never remember it! It's an encrusting coral -- looks like what is called a Lesser Star coral -- but that's not it. Anyway -- it's about 8 inches and the lower half has not been opening. They do not touch at all. It could be flow I guess as I changed it recently but I did not think it was getting hit.

I do have a bag of carbon -- don't have room to run a filter -- that happens when I finally shift the sump to the basement.
