Do i need Moonlights?

Does my tank need moon lights? Or can i have it all off? Im running dimmable Leds and the lowest it can go is still pretty bright and a couple zoas and palys stay open sometimes, my goniopora stays pretty big also ....

Another question-is it good to have all the corals open and night?

Moonlights are for your viewing benefit ONLY. they do nothing at all for the inhabitants of your tank. I have found that a better way to view the nighttime goings on in your tank is to cover a flashlight with red cellophane. You will be amazed at what you see.

wouldn't it be cool if some mfgs included some 1w red led's as part of their arrays for nighttime viewing?

Actually in nature coral spawn by the phase of the moon. Not to say this will happen in your environment but to say it's just for you is wrong!

+2 I used to use a red filter over my dive light for night diving. Many animals cannot see red light so they are not intimidated.

But I seem to recall this is a gravity issue rather than a light issue.

I vote, yes. A reef should NEVER be without moonlights. Also, corals would never grow without it!

Well, the corals and fish don't need moonlights but YOU may for your own aesthetic enjoyment.

i have them on both of my fixtures. on my 55 i have them on at night. the animals in the tank are trained they get fed with the lights on. so they dont do anthing at night. i also leave them on in that tank cause i want to be able to see the eel and make sure he is not trying to esacpe or anything. just so i can kee an eye on that tank.

now the 46 bow on the other hand i leave them off. when you look at the tank during the day all u see is fish and turbo snails and the corals of course. at night is a whole nother story. all 4 Emrald crabs come out. 18 Nas. snails are on the go. fighting conch is cruising. chestnut cowries hanging out. scarlet crabs busy eating. IMO the inverts have learned that the toby puffer sleeps at night. so thats when the clean and eat. they know that they are safe so the get busy.
