do pods really eat zoas?

I also have witnessed zoa munching amphipods in my tank. I've also just purchased a 6 line wrasse, but don't see how they can help since the amphipods come out at night and the wrasse goes to sleep around that time. I've fed more phyto & fish food & hope that keeps them off.

If you are feeding the tank more, you will just make the pod problem grow.
More food in the tank, will make the pods reproduce faster.
Feed less, make that six line work.
The wrasse hunts all day. He gets some of them every day.
 
I've been having problems with pods eating my RPE's and desert foxes. The population is slowly getting smaller thanks to my mandarin and 6 line.
 
well i just got my new fish(picked up a bi-color blenny about a week ago)and it looks like he has been pod-hunting.
so far im happy with him and i guess we'll see if it works out for the better
 
Watch ouot for that Bi-color the are coral nippers, I had a colony of anthalia sp. that consisted of about 300 polyps and with-in one night my Bi-color had 75% of it gone.
 
Wow, just found this thread and I'm astonished to see how many poeple have had this experience! I fragged some of my favourite zoas and put the frags in the refugium -- I have a well-lit area in the front to keep chaeto, crabs, frags etc. until I can take them to the LFS to trade in -- and within 48h the zoas were gone. The rocks were covered in pods (the fuge is absolutely teeming) and I thought nothing of it, figured they were just checking things out and cleaning off film algae or something, but it's plain they were consuming the zoas. These guys were amphipods like the one above, as well as others shaped like a grain of rice with legs all the way 'round, about 1/8" long. I should have known, since these guys jump on fish food or crab pellets dropped into the fuge (for the nassarius snails), they're obviously omnivorous... and HUNGRY... and immune to any toxins within the zoas. I won't make the same mistake again, so I guess I'll have to leave frags in the main tank from now on.
 
This is why we having reefing communities...now we know how important pod hunters are to the survival of zoa tanks! I've noticed most people have seen PE getting targeted? Is this a fair assesment or have others seen them attacking normal zoas or palys?

They go after all types, but more than a few have reported that PEs are a little tastier to them.
 
Good thing i got my 6 line .. he's like a prison guard he dont let NO pods out of his sight .. i love to watch him go after them .

i got a few, well all of my zoa from you. i have seen these PODs in my tank with the light on, but they're not that big as the one in the pic. i don't seem to have a problem with them eating my zoa or being any where near( more on the glass and rocks) them yet. will the size of the POD matter?
 
ime... the larger pods seem to like the PE type more and once they get a taste for them , they will keep eating until they are all gone and then they may go looking for the next best thing.

so far the bi-color has kept the two colonies i was having problems with clean and the larger pods seem to be less in numbers. ...he has picked at one sps( tan and yellow monti-digi)
but it doesnt look that bad yet. only 2 spots nipped at and i still have polyp extention.
 
Welps, I just started to notice some of my colonies have remained closed for days... thinking it was pests did the mucho dips... saw nothing... but been looking at night with the red light... noticed SWARMS of pods all over 1/2 of my colonies =(
especially the large ampipods which were almost 3/4 of a cm big. I could see them digging into the zoo's mouths... some of my zoo's I have noticed missing tentacles or torn pieces... argggghhhhhh....!

Even though my tank has been up for roughly 5-6 months its time for the POD EXTERMINATOR ( MANDARIN ) my small 6 line is not having an affect on the pod population.. to me it dosn't matter if he decimates the pod population as the fuge will constantly replenish and if need may be, I would just import more pods to the fuge if needed.
 
They have gone after my dragon eyes, envy red,purple fission, oranges and some of the bright greesn ( note: not a good ID'er, just compared to something which looks like on ZOAID )...

they haven't bother the other colonies yet ( cross my fingers )
