Do relatives think your hobby and it's obcession are nuts?

Please allow me to share.

My Dad was over while I was about to disembark upon my SCUBA trip. And as I explained what all of the new twists and turns did and the chart and flow diagrams and facets of my filtration did. And the amino additive and kalk powder dump and such. I go over how to test pH and go to my instructions of what to do.

My Dad looks at me like I'm one twisted sister and says, " Christ Mike I know the stuff is beautiful, but is all of this worth it?" I told him "well yeah...look at that coral over there and those 5 clams in that tank over there." He shook his head. Well, last night on the phone he says "ya know I was drinking your beer and enjoying my temporary stewardship of your tanks...And that purple thing...ya know in tank 1.?" "It was fantastic!" "I guess I see why you test and why you have all this plumbing and why you do...well all of this."

I just chuckled inside where it counts.
And pulled my hand down in an oh yeah when he told me that my setups were running rock stable based upon the readings he took.

So when the ole man looks at the tank after calling you crazy and says he understands, "what it's all about", you know you're not that crazy.

It's good to have your Dad on your side of the fence...
Too many times I've said "If I have to explain you wouldn't understand".
Glad to here your tanks are doing well too.
Enjoy the time away from the nasty weather.

Well, when I was 3 or 4 my Dad setup one, then two then I think it was up to 7 tanks and later a saltsetup. So he's probably more responsible for my reef tank addiction than anyone else...lol.

Thanks for the well wishes. My wife is so stoked (yes I did take a page out of Mr. Spicolli's book) about our diving so far. I can't wait to hit dive 25 on Saturday so I can do the 3 tank before I head home to he land of the ice and snow.

Pretty much all my family and friends think that. To make matters worse, I tend to be obsessive/compulsive so they really thinks its strange when I run out at all hours to get materials for a task.

I personally think your all nuts! However I lost power once again and went out to purchase a $700.00 generator for my 30 gal reef.I got it home, set it up and got it running, went to plug in the tanks and the power came back on.So now that I have nice generator, maybe I should get another tank and a bit larger. Obsessive? nah

oh no doubt about that one,,,,the wife thinks im wacko ,,,, my teenage kids just shake their heads , the guy next door comes over just to look
and see what im doing this week ,,,,,, my parents just dont understand either , Pop's is old school thinks everything for a fish tank should be right around $4.99 ,,,,,, and my mom is the cause for my sickness ,,,, she always had a marine tank when i was a kid ,,got me hooked way early in life ,,,,,,,,,,, we had a 55 gal in the wall for along time at home ,,i was always messing with it ,,and back in the day 55 was a real big tank !!!!!

funny as hell ,,i went to order some rock,,, ohhhhh man ,,you should have seen dad's face " rock he says , there a pile of it down the hill next to the damn horse barn " ,, nooooooo Pop's this is from Tonga ,,,, well a "damn rock is a rock" he says ,,,,,,,,, i think his pacemaker skipped a beat or two ,,,,, he likes it now when he comes over to see the grandkids ,,,i asked him if he wants me to set one up out at his place ...... not even a need for words !!! it was a no ,,,,,,,,,,, lol

Good stories, I also went for the generator because of a power outage, but we were out for three days so it was worth it.
My wife thinks I'm nuts but she does like the end result. After all, we were both dive certified and married in maui. My 13 year old duaghter loves it and goes to the events with me. My brother got a SW tank just after I did. But overall I get some strange feedback from family members about it.

People probably think it's strange, but looking at that tank helps me regain my sanity....well...until I notice that empty spot that would fit something I'm sure I will find at Salty Critter!
