Do the Avs have a chance against the Stars?

I haven't had the opportunity to watch much hockey this year and I hear the Stars are looking pretty good. Anybody think the Avs will win, and that was THINK not HOPE.

THINK not HOPE.

Do you really think that Robert or are you really hoping that will be the case. I guess a better way to ask is would you be willing to bet a Stars fan 50 bucks or nice frag on the series?

Brian

I really HOPE they can, but I can't honestly say that I expect the Avs to win the series.

I think the new goalie is doing awesome. He was the only one really playing in the last game.

Depends on if Theodore gets hot. He's looked better each game he played (man did he stink those first couple of games). The Avs will give him a lot of help on defense (how many shots do they block, anyway?).

So, I'd say it really depends on if they can get anything past Turco. Their offense has sucked the last few weeks. Getting Tanguay back helped. Getting Turgeon back hasn't, much. Hejduk has been cold. Lacroix really needed to go out and find someone to fill Konowalchuk's role at the trade deadline but it just didn't happen. Brunette's done a good job on the first line in that sort of role, but they need someone doing it with Turgeon, too.

But, then again, it's not all bad. Where Dallas really excelled this year was on the shootout and that's out of the picture. They have more offense than Calgary would have, but I don't think they're as tough defensively and certainly not as good on the forecheck as Calgary. Turco's a tough one, though.

So, this series depends, IMHO, on whose goalie gets the hottest and whether the Avs can rediscover any of their early season scoring magic (and not give up on the defense to do it, like they did early in the season).

I personally don't think the Avs have the killer instinct this year. They've let too many opponents come back on them instead of putting them away.

Anyway, nice to talk hockey with you again, Brian! How's the weather?

Good info Fish, I appreciate it. The weather has been great for the last 3 weeks or so. Anywhere from 20 to 40 and the breakup as started. That might not sound great but I can now comfortably wear shorts at 20. I do still need some type of fleece top but the legs are fine as long as there is no wind. At 30, it's t-shirt and shorts weather. I tried a t-shirt and shorts last Friday and it was 20 with some wind and I froze my arse off. The sun is really starting to take over too.
Brian

You've been hanging out with the polar bears too long. And you're making me shiver just talking about it (and I tend to wear kilts all winter, too :) ).

The other Avs, thing: They have a rookie forward (Wolski) they called up for a while during the season who was really pretty amazing. He had some really strong games. They had to keep him in juniors because of some call-up rule or the salary cap, or something. Anyway, there ain't a cap in the playoffs, so look for him to be back. Now, we all know that offense in the regular season is very definitely not the same as offense in the playoffs, but he might be able to take some pressure off some of the other guys. Food for thought.

Colorado against Dallas this season 1-1-2.

Each game Colorado played Budaj between the pipes.

Theo > Budaj. The 2 OT games went to Dallas but in a shootout. Those games could have gone either way in a playoff OT format, no shootout. IMO the Avs in 6 is a sound prediction.

I say the Avs win it in 6...the matchups favor the Avs, and Theo is the X factor.

There is a 50/50 chance the Avs win the series...they either win it in 6 or lose it in 7. Home ice being the difference in the two.

COreefer--It's tough to say. Going back and looking at the schedule: the first game was the second game of the year (win) and the second game was early November (SO loss right after they'd won four in a row including those two at home vs. Vancouver). The third game (SO loss) was a very different Avs team at the end of January. They'd just lost 2 of 3 after having that incredible streak of winning 8 in a row in early January with Aebischer. The fourth game (loss) was in early March right before the Olympics.

So, the Avs haven't beat Dallas since the second game of the season. It's not a great record, but I have to agree with you that a hot Theodore would really make a difference (if, that is, they can get some offense going).

Good stuff guys, is Theodore 100% healthy? I know when we traded for him, there weren't sure if he would be ready this season. I am wondering if he is just toughing it out and playing with an injury or did he heal up faster than anticipated. If he is still hurt, a 7 game series could be hard on him. If healthy, we all know what a hot goalie can do in the playoffs. I am not sure how many if any games I will get to watch up here. So far, OLN's coverage is pretty poor and I don't know if they will pick it up for the playoffs. And from what I have read and heard, I think the Stars will win in 5 but hope I am wrong. I will also be cheering for Philly.

Cheering for Philly? Against Chris Drury and Buffalo? Oooh. Can I just hope they tie? :)

OLN bites. Their camera angles are far too close to actually see what's going on on the ice. And the announcers don't know diddly. Actually, it might be a lot like watching NBC. :) I've been pretty happy with Altitude's coverage, at least since they booted the first play-by-play guy. You can't go wrong with Peter McNab.

I think Theodore was always predicted to be 100% by the beginning of the playoffs. Of course, they aren't going to really tell you if he's healthy or not, but he's looked progressively better. He's looked really good against break-aways. I've been really impressed with his work there.

It's all about #21, the best player (not counting goalies) to put on an Avs jersey ;)

Plus Drury only shows up about every 4th or 5th game but when he does show up he does some amazing stuff. At least that's how he was with the Avs, haven't paid much attention since he left.

#19 is the best player to ever put an Avs sweater..he demonstrated that in 2001 carrying the team through the WC and SC finals without Forsberg, and again this season in his stretch of 11 games in which he registered 23 points. This was after Svatos and tanguay went out with injury. Without the captain's play during that stretch, the Avs don't make the playoffs. Forsberg has the tools but he does not have the stamina...he will always be second tier to Joe.

Folks will never say, "Forsberg was one of the greatest to play the game", but they are already saying it about Sakic.

Sakic

#17 all time in goals scored

#12 all time in points

#15 all time in points

And Sakic will play another 3-4 years at his current level. Forsberg will never come close to what Sakic has done because his body will not allow it. I don't even put Roy ahead of Sakic because Sakic chas carried this team before Roy, during Roy and after Roy. The samegoes for the Forsberg arguement because Sakic will be carrying this team 3 years from now.

"Forsberg was one of the greatest to play the game"
I said it, I think Robert said it once during our conversations and I'm sure a few more have said it so I think that should satisfy the Folks part of it. There is even a good chance that 9,016,596 folks in Sweden might agree.;)

It was just my opinion, I like the way Forsberg played both sides of the ice and how he made the players around him much better. I think Forsberg made plays that very few other players if any could have made.

Sakic has been the more consistent player for sure and he has a wicked shot, much better than Forsberg. However, when Forsberg is healthy, granted, it isn't often, I don't think there is any body better, in any jersey with or without a spleen.;)

Again, just my opinion.
