Do the Avs have a chance against the Stars?

Well there's a pretty good shot Forsberg won't even get into the hall of fame.

We can all have our preferences, however, I'll let the stats speak for themselves. Sure 5 years ago everyone thought Forsberg may turn out to be one of the greatest if not the greatest Av player of all time. Lacroix went on record as saying he did not want to be the GM that let Forsberg go. That was 5 years ago and my oh my how thing have changed. Since then, Forsberg has missed an entire season, played 37 games in 03-04 and 50 some odd this season. I don't disagree that Forsberg has skills perhaps unparalelled in the sport in the last 15 years but unfortunately his conditioning and body have prohibited him from reaching a plain in which he can be considered with the alltime greats of the sport.

Sakic on the other hand isn't just consistent, he performs at a very high level every season, and is in superb physical condition for a man of his age. There is a good chance Sakic goes down in the top 5 all time in NHL scoring, and he will most likely do it playing all of his years with the Avs/Nordique organization. You still think he isn't the greatest of all Avalanche players?? Even greater than Roy who accumulated half of his stats in Montreal?? Sakic is the embodies the Avalanche organization.

I guess we'll have to let the stats speak for themselves and agree to disagree on this one.

Sounds good Eric, I am not trying to say Sakic sucks even though I have yelled that a few times at the tv but I am not that much of a stats guy.

I may be wrong with this one also but I would say that both Gayle Sayers and Bo Jackson were better running backs than Curtis Martin and Jerome Bettis. Martin is 4th in all time yards and Bettis is 5th. Neither Sayers or Jackson are in the top 20 in rushing yards. At rushing TD's, Martin is 10th and could be 7th by the end of this year, Bettis is 11th. Neither Sayers or Jackson are in the top 20. I would feel very comfortable saying Sayers and Jackson were better running backs. I might even say I never saw a running back better than Bo Jackson and I think a few folks might agree with me but then again maybe not;). I do know a lot of people say that about Sayers but I didn't get to see Sayers play that much so I wouldn't make that statment.

I do hope you are right and Sakic and he can lead the Avs again this year.
Brian

Well, I can definitely see the merits of your argument in a better light when you compare Forsberg to Jackson and Sayers. I would agree that Jackson in particular was a great talent. Sayers...I don't know because I never saw him play.

I would contend that yes, Forsberg is the better talent, he has much more skill than Sakic and perhaps anyone in the last 15 years in the NHL. So if you are looking at things purely through an issue of talent and ability, yes Forsberg is the more skilled player. I'm just applying the intangibles as well, such as leadership, longevity, consistency, etc...where you would compare Forsberg to Jackson, I would compare Sakic to someone more like Cal Ripken, or Pete Rose (his playing days), even Mickey Mantle. I can see where you are coming from though.

Okay, I have to admit that I'm avoiding the Joe vs. Peter fight. I've got to say though, that I sure miss Joe on the second line. Watching the opposition's 2nd-line defensemen trying to cover Joe was beautiful. And some of those big 1st-line bruisers just beat the hell out of him when he's the main guy.

But, despite my attempt to stay neutral, here's something to read:

It was just a good friendly debate, Eric and I always have them.;)

I read that story this morning and look forward to seeing the kid play. Oh crap, I just remembered I have a meeting with my Communication class at 10:30 and I think the game starts at 11 here. Looks like I will miss all of the game, an A is more important than this game. I was getting all ready to watch some playoff hockey too. Hopefully, I can watch game two before 24.
Brian

Well, it's certainly not that I'm scared of the debate. Heck, I've never stepped back from a good debate. :)

For one thing, I'm really not sure where I come down on it. Joe is a natural leader and one of the most consistent and hardest working players I've ever seen who can inspire a team to greatness through example. Peter has incredible talent, plays hockey like a grand master plays chess, and has the ability to drag a team to greatness on his back if he has to (and will still outskate the defense even with the whole team on his back).

But, Joe inspires respect and friendship where ever he goes. Peter's one of those guys (like Roy) where you either love him and think he's amazing, or you hate him and you think he's the biggest diver you've ever seen.

It's kind of like our past two presidents. I don't want to go into specifics at all, but both of those guys have the ability to inspire the people who like them and drive the people who don't like them into hysterical craziness.

I sure wish Joe would run for president. I don't even care that he's Canadian. :)

I hope Wolski is capable of anchoring a line and winning face offs. This is the biggest question mark for this guy.

If he can do this, watch out...the Avs will have found a dimensuion they have been lacking all season long, replacing the play making capacity and size of Forsberg.

From the 9 games he played in he seemed to me like a floater, a natural winger, but perhaps his stint in Brampton this season instilled the confidence needed to play center. it all starts tomorrow.

GO AVS!!!

You may have to skip school Brian to watch the game. I know I would be if I had class. Wait a minute, I have class Monday night...I guess I'll be skipping out on that one. :)

You know Eric I would if it was just me but it's part of a group project and I know it would hurt the rest of the guys in the group. Plus they elected me group leader, I think that was because I was very vocal about our group not carrying any dead weight and everybody will need to participate. I really hate group projects because of that crap but this group has worked out really well. I thought about taping the game but I haven't decided yet. Watch it turn out to be the only Avs game they show up here.;) Plus it's only 2 weeks till finals and I took 6 classes this semester, I guess it's really 5 classes plus weightlifting. Man, I hope I don't have a final in that one also.;)

I look forward to seeing this Wolski play.
Go Avs and I would vote for Joe, he would be great for the long term but Peter could do wonders for us for a year or two;)
Brian

Wolski is a rookie and has never expereinced NHL Playoffs. With the lack of scoring down the stretch, Theodore will have to be huge for us to have a chance. I hate to say it, but it's time to look forward to next year. Pierre needs to resign Blake & Sakic for less money and go out and get another goal scorer in free agency. Too many injuries and a lack of depth will kill us. I hope I'm wrong.

Looks like a good start and it sounded like Wolski played pretty good. Of course I didn't get to see any of it. Looks like I get to watch game two on OLN, it starts at 5.
Brian

I didn't get to see all of the game either, but what I saw looked good. The Avs came out and looked like they wanted the game. I guess Dallas didn't get a shot on goal until ten minutes into the game. If they'd played like that all season they would have won the division.

Philly and Buffalo was a fun game to watch.

Well, what it does do, is it negates the home ice advantage for Dallas. I just hope they can keep that kind of intensity up.

Well, the Avs have sure laid an egg in the 2nd period. The one thing I have never understood about sports is why teams sit on leads.

Well, that's what I was saying farther up the thread. The Avs have let teams come back on them all year. I have to run, though. Overtime's about to start. :)
