Do UV sterilizers work on ich, velvet , brook?

Wondering if any literature y'all may have come across that say it is beneficial to use UV while in quarantine. Or if anyone is using it currently with quarantine. Any thoughts.

UV will kill the free swimming forms of many parasites IF the UV bulb is still under 1 year of age ,IF the flow rate is proper rate for the UV unit ,If the quartz tube is clean .However since all of the free swimming parasites will not pass thru the UV light it will not eradicate disease but rather reduce the number of parasites looking to attach to fish.Yes it is an asset in qt.

Hi DrPat

Could you please explain proper rate for the UV unit?

UV can kill all good bacteria?

What do you think about using UV in fallow tank?

Thanks in advance

you will get mixed feedback on this but i personally run a UV and believe it helps. No, it will not get all but to me if it gets any at all thats beneficial to me.

UV does nothing to help a fallow tank. UV can kill the parasites that enter it, if you have the right flow at the right wattage to kill it(do some searches if you really want to know for specific parasites, there are tables out there)... you can't eradicate the parasites from a tank using just UV, so I feel it's pointless to use it for that reason. UV has other positives though, I just wouldn't use it for parasite control as there are better alternatives that are actually effective, while your fish can die from parasites no matter what UV filter you are using.

UV sterilizer work for sales and holding systems as long as all tanks are connected in parallel to the central filter and sterilizer.
But there they only work to limit the spread of diseases from tank to tank, not to cure present infections.
Also, those UV units are much more powerful than what you can buy in a pet store. What you find in pet stores is generally only good against algae blooms.
To actually treat an infection with UV the tank would need be bare bottom and not even PVC pieces. The flow through the UV unit and tank would need to be at a minimum 7 times the entire tank volume. The flow would also have to be in such way that there are no still or low flow areas in the tank where matter could collect.

Considering all that, I think there are easier ways to cure fish from ich and velvet.

Another issue is that there are plenty of parasites and diseases that have no off fish reproduction, but rather multiply by simple division.
