I was at a LFS today and I was speaking with one of the employees and we got on the subject of feeding corals. I told him I never fed my corals and he seemed surprised. After I showed him photos of my tank and I told him that most of my colonies started as frags he was shocked that I never fed my corals. This got me thinking, just how many reef keepers actual feed their corals intentionally?

Do you feed you corals?

I will occasionally feed my brain and favias. I occasionally feed frozen, which creates a mess in the tank, so I guess, yes, I feed everything wiht that, LOL! I do not use any specific coral food, like reef chilli or similar.

I like to target feed once a week. It's cool seeing my chalices grab a hold of mysis and other foods as well. I think it might help speed up the growth.

I feed mine ocean blend, its coral food. It's like an orange powder that you mix with your tank water. My corals seem to like it. I target feed, so as soon as it touches my palys or zoa's they close up and as soon as their done they open right up. And my chalices open their mouths (eyes) to eat it.

Just bought fauna Marin lps pellets, started feeding zoas ,chalices, and others,it's fun to watch these little guys swallow, and I'll look for growth and color.

reef chili like twice a month or whenever i remember. its a pain tho cause i boil some salt water, let it cool then put it all in a syringe to put it under vacuum annnnnnd feed

I think I may have been overfeeding, but in return i have bumped it up to weekly 30 gal water changes and i get 4-5 days on my filter sock on the system and short of a little cyano on the sand bed everything is growing rapidly and with great color. (sps, zoas, and lps) Ive been feeding the tank and also spot feeding specific corals regularily a mix of cyclopeze, live and frozen brine, frozen mysis, "coral food", and copepodsMax (the arctic pods)

In my experience, I think spot feeding is overrated except for certain corals. The only corals I spot feed are my Duncans. Everything else get poop and left over frozen fish foods.

Some might not agree with my ways but I keep my tank and it's inhabitants right on the brink of being underfed. My idea is that most problems that arise in reef tanks are caused by overfeeding and adding to much "stuff" to the tank. So far it has served me well as all my corals, fish & inverts are all growing, breeding and happy. I might not have insane growth like some but my phosphates and nitrates are zero, and algae has never been an issue in any of my tanks.
