Do you quarrantine your anemones?

I am still working on setting up my tank, and getting all my ducks in a row. As the questions come up I spot them. I was wondering if you guys quarratine your anemones they way you might with any new fish or corals?

Thanks for the info,
Gerry

I've never quarantined any of my anemones. I think it would be a good idea, not from the perspective of the anemone bringing in a disease/parasites that would infect fish or coral, but more from a survivability standpoint. When anemones die, they end up melting and smell terrible, and can nuke a tank. The problem though, is that most quarantine tanks aren't suited to house an anemone -- lighting and water parameters are usually different from the display tank -- the display tank being more suitable. In other words, setting up a quarantine tank that replicates the display tank is usually more trouble than it's worth.

What size tank are you setting up and what kind of anemone are you planning to get?

I do not quaratine my anemonies. They are very delicate and most quaratine tanks are not well suited for them.

Yes, but we have a well established QT just for corals/live rock. We QT anything that has water on it. If you don't have a well established QT with adequate lights, it probably isn't a good idea.

Here are the details. I am setting up a corner shaped aquarium, approx. 60 gallons. It will have a kessil A350 for a light source.

I also have an aquapod 24g aquarium with compact flourescent lighting. The good thing is nothing is set up just yet. I plan on cycling the QT about 4 weeks before the DT. That way I can introduce fish in quarrantine for 6 weeks. By then the DT should be cycled and ready to go.

Now, the reason why I ask about the anemone. I have had experience with a minireef tank before, but this was years ago and a lot of my knowledge is either gone (ie I don't rememer) or a lot has changed since then. So, my master plan would be to use the Kessil A350 over the QT with the anemone first. If everything goes well then transfer both the Kessil and A350 to the DT tank. Then, I can start to add in fish over several months as they make there way out of the QT tank.

Eventually, I plan to start adding in some various LPS and SPS corals. I have heard recommendations both ways about anemones:
1. Add them to an established tank that is over a year old.
2. Add them first, let them find a place to settle down, and then add your other corals.

The anemone I plan on getting will be one of the bulb tip varieties depending on what I find in good shape at the time. The only concern I have is that either way the QT and DT will not be "established" tanks.

What do you guys thinK? I had a lot of success before with bulb tip anemones in my 29g minireef. I could not keep them from dividing or growing to fast, and I eventually ended up with just an anemone tank after they took it all over (and one very happy maroon clown who loved swimming from one to the other).

Personally I wouldn't quarantine an anemone for the reasons above (different water and lighting). I also wouldn't add an anemone until the tanks have been running for atleast six months. From what I've read about anemones is that they need a mature tank to survive.

The only anemones I quarantine are the few I have collected in the wild, condy, stone flower, corkscrew and hitchhiker anemones. And I've never seen anything wrong with them. BTW, they all seem to do just fine in a QT. I'm not so sure store bought anemones would do so well.
