both - I have two anirondack chairs I love to sit an watch with my morning coffee.

I stand when I want to take a closer look.

I typically stand but only because of the layout of the downstairs living room and lack of mobile sitting devices in it. But sitting to view would be really nice.

I have been making a concerted effort to keep my hands out of the tank. Now I sit on the couch with the stand doors open observing everything, only diving in if something fell or if something is in the path of my walking GBTA. It seems that everyhing is happier this way, especially the star of the tank- my shy blonde naso.

For the sake of not derailing the other thread where this started ill post this here. The first stand I built for my 120g was because of the height of prefab stands, not initially for viewing but because I had a 55g that I wanted to use for the sump. After planning and thinking of other ways I decided that the 55g was the way I wanted to go, I wanted a fuge a filter sock a skimmer and a decent sized area for the return pump and at the time I initially wanted a calcium reactor eventually. As it turned out I liked having the tank higher and don't think I could go back to a shorter height. But for the record I haven't ever gotten a sore back from viewing lower tanks, but it is nice for extended viewing to not have to lean over stand with your hands on your knees. Sorry for the detail here but I thought it would be a little better here rather than a build thread. :)

My aquarium is set up to be viewed from 2 sides - the front which must be viewed standing up because of a lack of seats (unless you move one, which I've been known to do :)) and the left side panel, which can be viewed perfectly from my armchair. If you are laying in a particular way on the couch or entering from the front door, you can get the corner view of both panels. Basically I tried to maximize viewing of the aquarium from the spots I like to be :)

I stand because it doesn't take long enough to look at 5 gallons of water to constitute dragging a chair over to sit in for 90 seconds. Besides, I have to be alert at all times with two youngeons running around.

However, when I had my 180 and 120, I definitely sat.... for hours.

dude... with those two boys your days of sitting ARE OVER for the next 15 years!

Can't vote because I do both. My tank is a nano at typical height, so viewing from above is easy. With the pumps turned off you can clearly see the corals as nature demands their full glory be - facing up to the light.

But the hobby demands we follow the tradition of viewing tanks from the front too. Frankly it's unnatural, but I spend a lot of time on a chair viewing from the front. It gives me a perspective of the view most reefers think my tank should be viewed from.

I have a small love seat in the fish room for just looking and an old roll around office chair to roll back and forth for up close viewing.

My last 2 tanks have been on taller than standard stands. Aimed at keeping the tank at eye level while standing. Most of the viewing in this house, is done while standing.

stand when showing to guests. sit for hours with the kitties on my lap weekend evenings after peewee and the mama have gone to bed.

I like to sit on a footstool that puts me eye level with the lower half of the tank. It's a totally different point of view.

I do both, it just depends on my purpose when I watch the tank. If I'm going to watch for hours, I'll sit, have a cup of coffee, and just enjoy. I'll stand when I want to get close to the tank and inspect how every coral and fish is doing.

mine is in my bedroom so i sit stand and lay down watching it lol then i tinker on a daily basis. im convinced if it was in the living room i wouldnt touch it as much
