My male has been getting GBD weekly and I have had to manually evacuate his pouch. I have a skimmer, the only thing that has changed is that we had our water softener fail and had to use the reverse osmosis through hard water and since the hard water he has GBD.

Skimmer isn't the problem.
Try flushing the pouch with new aged salt water, matched to pH and temperature of tank water.
As a last resort, you can flush with Diamox. (Probably need a prescription)

How easy and effective is that Hydor skimmer, Brian? I've seen them in stores but never seen anyone using it. I love my Tunze nano, so I doubt I would change, but it's always a possibility!

for those of you that dont use a skimmer are u running an ATS?
suprised by the amount of ppl not using skimmers...just saying i love the idea.
but not sure i am even doing a SH tank keep going back and forth witha reef...

Sorry, what does ATS stand for?

Algae Turf Scrubber!

This is a pretty old poll. I think the myth that skmmers cause gas bubble disease (GBD) has been pretty well debunked. Skimmers will decrease the amount of GBD issues.

ATS are very good. In a perfect world, one would use both it and a skimmer on a seahorse tank. Even with a ATS, I would still recommend a skimmer. Seahorse tanks often have a very high organic load, much more than a typical tank, due to the mechanics of how seahorses eat, their digestive system and the amount and type of food being added to the tank. A proper skimmer can pull much of this out of the water column. ATS help with water quality but the organic matter still has to be broken down and it is the microbial life that does this that creates the issues for seahorses.

and to add to dan's response, beyond the ats, one of the latest things being touted is the Algae Remediation Illuminated Device or ARID. sounds complicated, but basically they are a reactor like we use for carbon, biopellets and the like, surrounded or with a central core of lights favoring the red end of the spectrum, in which chaeto is grown rapidly. the purpose is the same as a refugium and an ats, the exportation of excess nutrients by growing and harvesting macroalgae. i've been fighting algae on my main tank despite refugia full of macroalgae, so i'm going to be installing one of these and see how it helps.

I had issues with bluestripe pipefish males in tanks without or inadequate skimmers.

I do not think skimmers cause this - it's rather the opposite.

I have a 75g seahorse only tank with a hob filter and a hob skimmer and a hob refugium

I have a an SCA 302 skimmer which almost 3Xs the volume of my tank plus my tank is not fully stocked.
