Ohhh I just pulled a newbie and got lazy dosing the b ionic a couple of days......it was so depressed it wasn't helping much, so I decided to put in some powdered buffer to get it where I needed......
I use the proper ph 8.2 and have had great results from it, but add just a little too much and shot the alk to about 12 or 13......
did some water changes but you know once this all starts its hard to recover.....a cascade of trouble has started since then.....
Some localized STN mostly on some really encrusted pieces, and since I have 150 DE MH's, that kind of growth is hard and slow to come by.
Its a slippery slope you see, your invertebrates try to die on you which could cause a spike, my anenome got caught in the powerhead last night, (it had detached because of the alk after a year in the same spot), luckly it wasn't the foot or mouth that got caught so it looks like it will make a recovery. However, my spinecheek clown wouldn't leave it alone so I caught it, durring which the spines got caught and nearly pulled them off.........
Lesson: Be vigilant and always do your husbandry on time!!
Back to the SPS, I noticed a little more recession today, I agree that it is probably STN and think I will ride it out, unless I have to cut and run, but am not looking forward to it.
I bought a piece a week before this happened, and of course it showing the worst of it being already stressed, but this morning noticed a green tinge to the whitened areas, and do not think this is algae. Do you think it is a possible regrowth telltale sign?
I believe my problems are definatly because of too high alk and two large swings back and forth. I am usually very up on it and keep it around 10dkh.......great results until now. I agree, as long as it is in the range, stablility is the key, however thats somewhat of an illussion to me right now!!!
I may post pics tonight/later
Thanks, Doug
