Dolomite

I'm I helusinating or my eyes had gone bad?????. For the past 3 yrs. i stop seing this on my MILLIS. and PROSTATA until today. Polyp extention always been good. Today, they look like ( CHUBACCA ). I introduce STEROID in my reef once again.:D PEACE

So if I am reading this correctly, you just add this stuff to your calcium reactor, right? Do I put it right on top of the A.R.M. mediia, or do I mix it in? As it dissolves it adds Mg and other beneficial minerals to the system. How is this different from A.R.M.?

I, like everyone else, want the best for my tanks. Have I been missing something with this dolomite?

Menard, where are you located so I can come and get some? Or, anyone from the south burbs or Downers Grove area making a trip to pick up?

Thanks
Chris

Put it on top of the A.R.M. media. I put 3/4 A.R.M. and 1/4 Dolomite. and yes "As it dissolves it adds Mg and other beneficial minerals to the system". Domomite adds Magnesium and Calcium like A.R.M., but A.R.M. does not have the Magnesium potency Dolomite has. And Doubledown, I do have some of the finer Dolomite I can spare ya at no cost. Let me know. I am in Aurora..

Chris , your understanding was correct. Just add them to your calcium reactor.Dolomite are heavyier than aragonite it will sink to the bot. Mix 'em any way it pleases you, it wont matter. Dolomite, does not dissolve fast like A.R.M media(Aragonite). Aragonite consistency varies depending on the batch.Looses Mag. ,Sr, or not enough for good coral growt. Dolomite will replace that in solution. All you need is just a handfull to keep it steady. I'm in Chicago, i think Elgin is much closer to you,if you ever in town let me know I'll give you some. JOHJ. when you ready I have some set aside just for you bud. PEACE

Menard, I went out there today, I picked up 75lbs of the 3/4". There are some rocks that are light brown, mixed in with the white stones, was told it's all dolomite. Any idea on that?
Going to rinse some now and add it to my reactor, just changed the media last week and left a little less than 1/4 empty at the top, so this will be easy. I'll let you know how my tank reacts in a few days.
As for the cost of this stuff, 75lbs for $2, was a bit of a surprise.
Cheapest thing I've bought for this hobby in a long time.

Sullyman,

Did you pick up the stuff that they call screening? It was the second to the last bin on the right..

Garrick

Garrick, I got the ca-11, supposed to be 3/4", but most pieces are smaller than that. Until I know better, I'll just add some of the white rocks.

Cool, I got the finer stuff "screening" which is also dolomite, but more of the crushed version. After I rinsed it REAL good it looked like Aragonite, but more greyish.

Good Luck

To you too, but let's make sure and post our results. I'm hoping for the Chewbaca effect that Menard experienced.

SULLY, coloration, pinkish to light brown they are OK. If you do see a dark rusty color throw them out. Iron or other metals ,more likely are present. GOLD, are exellent, corals loves gold.:D ........... PEACE

Have you check your Mag. levels yet? Heres my update, Today 1350, perfect. I used to add Mag. every 3 days 1 tsp.since the addition of dolomite mon. stays up in the up'er 1300. If you cant get it up to up'r 1300 add some more. Dolomite dissolve very, very slow. Before I strugle w/ this readings between 1260 to 1300. now I dont have to add mag. manually. PEACE

Menard,

If dolomite was put into a Magnum 350 with Carbon with it still work or does this have to go into a reactor?

Dude, aint gonna work. You need a PH of 6.5 to 6.8 weak acid, the only place can achieve that is Ca. Reactor. Any Ca. based media the condition has to be acidic in order to dissolve break apart.......... PEACE
