Dr. Roy- Symbiotic Relationship b/t Mantis and Sexy Shrimp

Hi Dr. Roy

Have you or your colleagues done and can you share any research information on symbiotic relationships between Mantis Shrimp and Sexy Shrimp (or any other animals)?

I recently picked up a trio of sexies and while doing some reading on them, came across a brief mentioning that periodically, sexies have be found in very close proximity to some mantis. The book I have actually has a couple of pics, one of the showing a sexy perched on a mantis in between it's eyestalks.

Not that I'm wanting to toss my trio into the O.s or smithii's tanks, I just found it very fascinating and hoped to learn more.

Thanks in advance.

I saw a picture similar to that except with cleaner shrimp that were living in the burrow with a large spearer.

Is it an actual symbiotic relationship (i.e. are both members gaining something)? Or is it a roommates kind of thing?

I'd imagine that the mantis gains free cleaning and detritus pickup (may be helpful to prevent various shell infections and the like) and the shrimp gains a free meal and protection from a crapload of predators. This may be more of a learned relationship than a instinctual relationship. Mantises are very much individuals and some may learn things others wouldn't be able to, and this doesn't seem extremely common....(thinkin aloud)

I just reread the entry in the book, Crustacea of The World - The pics and references are related to (spearer) Lysiosquillina lisa.

Photos show 3 different shrimp with the squilla; stenopus tenuirostris (banded shrimp), thor amboinensis (sexy) and Periclimenes imperator (emperor shrimp)

The writer also puzzles over the relationship - Possible reasoning includes - Burrow made with lots of mucus which may draw the cleaners and that squilla regurgitate fish's scales and other non-digestables also possibly attracting cleaners

Perhaps Dr. Roy will chime in

The pics are great - I wish I could scan and post but am unsure of copyright protection.

I've seen cleaners with Lysiosquillina maculata and L. lisa a few times in the wild. I never tried to facilitate this in the lab.

The only other shrimp/stomatopod association that I can verify is a snapping shrimp found in Squilla mantis burrows.

There are numerous reports of ostracods living with Hemisquila and Lysiosquillina.

lol dan. nice photoshop job. who knew those birds were marine?

For those unaware, Ostracods are small shrimp like arthropods that have a bivalved shell (sorta like a clam). I recently found that I have a population of them in my G. smithii nano... mine are about 1mm. Dr. Roy, how big are the ones you're talking about?

hey anyone willing to throw a few cleaners and sexies into their mantis tanks? ^^ in the name of science of course

Easily the post of the month. I lol'd quite a bit.

On a serious note, who owns a Lysiosquillina maculata or lisa that wants to do some research?

my peacock lived with a peppermint shrimp for a few months but then one day the peppermint was gone, lunch i suppose.

If I can successfully breed and rear my sexies, I might consider experimenting.

I am going to purchase more sexy shrimp soon to add to the existing 3. Hopefully I can manage to get a breeding pair. Currently researching shrimp breeding and preparing a kreisel tank for larvae.

Sexies are relatively easy to raise compared to other ornamental shrimp. Their first food can be BBS and they only last about a month in the planktonic or less I think. Also breed in small groups and not alot of cannabalism problems. It might take a few tries but I think you'll have good luck. (I'm sure you already know that of course, but I felt the need to add something :D )
