Drilling question???

Hello,

I have a marineland 110 gallon aquarium 48"x18"x30" I am trying to find out if the glass is tempered all around or just the bottom? I want to drill it for an overflow and my returns.

Someone please help because I am having a hard time finding out the answer and I don't want to just drill it without being sure.

you can google (youtube) a process by which you tell if the glass is tempered or not...it involves the use of polarized sunglasses ( the cheapo $10 wallmart ones will work if you dont have any) and a laptop...

another indicator would be if the glass is any thinner then 3/8" (9mm), but this is not always the case. but generally thicker glass means it isnt tempered.

i am also sure that Marinelands website will indicate which tanks typically have only tempered bottoms compared to the ones tempered all round..

if i were a betting man i would say just the bottom is tempered

The standard 110 is not supposed to have any tempered panels. That being said I always check with the polarized glasses and my laptop. It works, and is the only way to be sure, besides starting to drill and shattering it of course :)

i believe marineland and perfecto are the same. i have a 125 gallon perfecto(anchor logo). i read on their website under faq that their tanks are tempered on the bottoms and not the sides. i just drilled an overflow and returns using gl*******s.com kit. i had no issues with it.

Question
which sides are tempered on the perfecto non-reef ready 6 ft L 125 G aquariums

I have a 72" perfecto tank regular style there is a sticker under the bottom brace that says tempered glass do not drill. Is that just the bottom or all sides or what? i am wanting to use it as a sump/refuguim on my 240G tank so i would like to no if i can drill it for return and inlet lines in the side an back panels.

Just the bottom of this aquarium is tempered. The sides and ends can be drilled. Please keep in mind, drilling the glass yourself voids the warranty. We do offer custom tank services, including drilling. Having us make the tank for you with the holes predrilled will allow us to still offer a warranty on the aquarium. If you are interested in placing a custom order, please contact your local pet store, and they can assist you with placing an order.

Thank you,

To check for Tempered Glass. Place the laptop screen on one side of the glass with a white background or notepad running full screen. Look through the sunglasses backwards at the screen. Rotate the lens. the image will darken. If it darkens evenly then the glass is not tempered. If the screen darkens distorted then it is tempered. Don't try it with a phone though. Most phone screens are tempered and it cancels out the test.
