Drillmaster Jason owes me!

I just got back from a house call. Jasons' 55 gallon overflowed and his tank watcher called me because it was an emergency. Under normal circumstances I wouldn't be upset, but THIS was too much.
The drillmaster still has a siphon tube.

I haven't tried to fill a siphon tube in 10 years. After 6 tries and 5 mouthfulls of water we finally have a locked in siphon. No casualties in the tank (although I feel a little queasy). Its a mystery why the siphon wopuld fail all of a sudden like that but I will monitor the situation till he gets home.
I need to go brush my teeth!
Can you catch typhus or dysentary from a reef tank?
I feel queasy!
I believe some purely medicinal refreshments may be in order.
Boy is he gonna drill that tank when he gets home!

ok, that's not how my new tank is setup, thank goodness!!! It figures, isn't that always how it happens, when you're gone...

I have siphen tubes on both my tanks. I use an air hose and put it up the tube to start it. I rarely ever drink any of the water but boy is it nasty when you do lol.
I think it's more in my head thinking of all the gross stuff in the tank ewwww lmao. Maybe you should have added some kool-aid for flavor lol.

Ohhhh it just dawned me you can't drill a 55 (except mine cuz it's so old lol).

The way the overflow box has been modified pretty much made it a done deal that I was gonna be slurping up tank water. I really haven't had to do this in about 10 years..
I think I still feel queasy.

CSI Jason has found the problem....

Seems that the water was let run down in the sump, those tape marks were there to mark where to keep the water up to to keep the pump from spitting bubbles..... WELL.... the pump spit bubbles.... the small bubbles collected in the single U siphon tube, and then slowly became a large Bubble....Breaking the siphon....or rather slowing it terminally.

I came home, added 4 gallons of water, cleared the tube, and it's fine.

I would like to thank Jon though... Without his Quick response, and willingness to wrap his lips around that tube and try repeatedly to drink 4 gallons of saltwater from the most "nutrient rich" mushroom tank in the house - I would surely come home and been in tears.

(I would do the same for you at a drop of a hat, but I would have used a much longer tube)

I have mentioned an idea to him once before, but want to mention it now on the forum... wouldn't it be nice, if there were a "Group" of advanced and knowledgeable hobbiests to be on call for relatives and friends that tank sit... at any time to call...

Jim, my neighbor, has had SW tanks for years.... MANY years. Recenly gave them up. Got a dog. (this is an amazing and awesome dog, but that is a different storry) He seemed to be the most logical since he had the expertise... yet super Jon was called into action, and responded with lightening speed and brute stomach strength and lightening anti hurl reflex to save a several hundred dollars in corals and shrooms... As some of us have found out, sometimes the most logical person isn't the closest... nor the most conveinet. Yet, I thought seroiusly about having Jon take care of my tanks in my absence... but didn't want to trouble him with the drive when my neighbor was so close...(I think Jim would have been offended if after my 3rd vacation, and his 4th offer I didn't let him.)

It would also help if the backup person or list has a system as complicated or more "intense" than your own.... or atleast equal to your own... it doesn't put my mind at ease knowing the person backing me up is running a 20 gallon tank with a undergravel filter and only a couple damsels that are hanging on by a thread, (not by afordability but by mastery...) so perhaps a scale.... or a list of names you leave taped to the tank, with your first thru 5 choices marked.... and if anything looks "funky" they call Jon... Appetite of steel.

So, what do you think....

I still feel queasy. The idea does have merit though. Murphy was definitely watching and waiting for you to leave on vacation, then BAM! down goes siphon!
Down goes siphon!
I know that I would feel more confident in vacationing if someone besides the twelve year old neighbor kid was watching my tank .

Put me down as #5.5.

Credentials:

10 gallon nano
No undergravel filter
1 health damsel (that I can't net for the live of me! I want a dam clown! or a pair of yellow tail blues ;7))
Not willing to put my lips on another man tube!

LOL

I've had every possible contact number for Jason posted on the back of the tank and on the kitchen counter twice when I've been out now. Had one incident I almost had him called, but managed to work it out over the phone with my step-son and a neigbor. Damage was already done, but was at least back in working order.

Jon, did you have to reduce your salt intake for a few days? :)

If they're half a quick as my Yellow Damsel it's not going to happen. One of these days when I have a ton of patients, I am going to try the old fishnet with a ziploc trick.

Try catching a single yellow damsel in a 200 !!! Finally got lucky though. After many attempts started to notice he favored jumping through a particular rock with a hole clear through it. Put a spare net behind the rock, with the rock resting in it. Next time he jumped in we just covered the other end behind him, grabbed both nets, and removed the rock with the little bugger still in it.

Catching mantis shrimp was easier!!!! Although still have that one crab getting huge I can't manage to get with a trap of any sort I've tried, or even an ice pick :O

Speaking of OWE.... I think tomorrow I will iradicate the micro bubbles from Jons tank... then we should be about even....

I was just over there... I didn't think it possible, but Jon has a bulkhead fitting installed BACKWARDS. Yep. The nut is on the inside... and the washer is on the outside... Anyone want to back me up on that if we're gonna take it appart, it's a good time to set things right.

And Scooter, why don't you and Connie stop over, I'll give you a half time show you won't soon forget, I'll remove 2 Yellow tail blues from the breeder tank in 10 minutes or less. As I recall I owe you a show as well.

J

you could always put me on that list. I am MORE than happy to help anyone while they are away. Either as a primary or the back up plan.
