drummereef's 180g in-wall build

Brett-Spent most of the day reading this thread. First of all, thanks SO MUCH for taking the time to post all these images and information! I think I learned more today than in the past YEAR! You are AMAZING! Just keeps me thinking "someday..."
I may have missed it, but are you using any power conditioners/backup UPS?

Thanks so much Ironman. :) I don't use any power conditioners per se but I do have 2 Vortech Battery Backups, one for each of my Vortech MP40s. This doesn't exactly help with long term power outages. Something I'm still working on... ;)

Brett, after all these pictures you finally post one that had some dust in it! Good for you! :) Krazie:jester:

Haha.

Sick man... sick. Egads. :crazy1:

I've been bitten by the sleeving bug. :D

I think that is why he took it... It is either staged or he is going to get after the person that gets rid of the dust... hahaha

Hahaha. That's not dust, it's "magic reef powder".

Brett,
Did you end up changing shortening your galaxy power cords? I order cords to make mine longer. I only had 10' and need like 13' got a 15'.

They are standard computer cords but in 14guage. I ordered from here. Great prices too and seem to be a very nice cable.
http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10228

Your basically looking for this type of cord and ends:
Nema 5-15P to IEC-320 C-13
Seems 1,2,3 6,10, 15 and 25' are very standard lengths.

Brett, i was wondering if you ever used a scrubber, if so what are your thoughts against an algae refugium and do you think the Coral Compulsion LED Refugium Grow Light is a good light for it.

Brett,

So time has come I'm tired of looking at my sand. I've never been happy with it at all and it never stays put either.

I went ahead and got some reef flakes.

How did you remove your sand and how fast? Did you replace with the flakes as you went?

Thanks for the heads up! I did shorten mine, however I went about it a bit differently. I'll update in a bit... ;)

Brett,

what can i say....your attention for detail is inspiring. I would be afraid to even walk in your sump room. amazing!

Thank you reeftank. LOL, you'd have to walk through my dirty laundry room first. :D

Hey Vlado. I haven't used a scrubber so I can't comment directly on that. I do however know they work if you are willing to put in the effort to build one and maintain it. I can't really think of any negative aspects of an algae refugium, I'm assuming you are referring to the one I have on my system. It's a great place to breed pods and perhaps there's a little nutrient uptake benefit as well. So far so good using the Coral Compulsion Bulb, no complaints yet. The Chaeto is growing under the light, not crazy fast, but it's growing. :)

Weird refugium light, what's the value of the blues?

Here are the full specs on the Refugium Grow Light. ;)

You'll love the Reeflakes! Nice choice. I removed mine over a 2-3 week period, as I would do water changes. I removed all the sand prior to adding the Reeflakes. I even took a Maxi Jet and blew out as much as I could from under the rocks just to get all that I could. I used some tubing and ran it into a 5 gallon bucket to remove the sand. Dumped and repeated about a 100 times. Let me know how it turns out! :)

I would like to see somebody actually do a side by side comparison of that LED to a $20 LED for growing Chaeto in the the 6500k spectrum. I think their combination of LEDs would actually lose.

That would be interesting. Let me know if you put the data together. :D I can tell you I've had more growth with Coral Compulsions "bulb" versus the spiral fluorescent bulb I previously ran. And I'm able to, so far, keep a Purple Stag frag under the light as well. I'm currently doing some testing as to whether I can use the fuge as a dual fuge/frag tank - something that I couldn't do with my previous lighting setup. ;)

I'm sure the LED will kill the cfl, but can it kill a cheaper LED in the same spectrum is the question.

UPDATE:

So I wanted to post an update on my "cable management" project. This is to tidy up the visible wiring in the sump room. If any of you follow custom PC building, wire sleeving is very popular these days. It's my goal to incorporate the clean, custom look you can achieve by sleeving to my electrical panel. There's quite a bit of information on PC forums but here's my variation on the process. The wires I'm sleeving in this tutorial are from my Galaxy ballasts. :)

The first step in this project was to strip the outer jacket from the wire bundle. If you were sleeving individual wires this step wouldn't be necessary, but since I'm "replacing" the sleeve with something more attractive this is a necessary step. I used a straight razor blade to gently score the jacket, then pulled the jacket off to reveal the wires below.

Once the jacket had been stripped to the proper length I wrapped the wire bundle with Scotch 35 Vinyl Gray Electrical Tape. The gray tape helps keep the color of the wires from "bleeding" through the sleeving. Typically you would match the wire color to the sleeving color you are using, but since this was a pre-made bundle the tape works perfectly.

BraidedSleeving-2.jpg~original

The sleeving I'm using for this part of the project is 1/4" TechFlex Clean Cut sleeving in the gray color.

BraidedSleeving-3.jpg~original

Closeup of the sleeving. The sleeving has a tightly woven braid of PET strands. TechFlex offers a variety of sleeving but their Clean Cut is highly recommended on the interwebs as a quality sleeve.

BraidedSleeving-4.jpg~original

Next step was to cut a length of sleeving. The wider you expand the sleeve the shorter it gets, so it's important to cut the sleeve a little longer than the wire you are sleeving.

BraidedSleeving-5.jpg~original

An important step for any sleeving job is to use a lighter to lightly melt the edges after cutting. This avoids fraying as you are working with the sleeving. A small BIC lighter works perfect for this.

More to come... :fish1:

Here's a little tip for you... You can gently expand heat shrink tubing with some needle nose pliers if you need a little extra "wiggle room" when sliding heat shrink over a cable. It shrinks back to shape after heat is applied.

BraidedSleeving-6.jpg~original

Once the sleeving had been installed on the wire bundle a short length of heat shrink was added to cover the joint between the TechFlex and the original jacket from the cable. This also helps keep the end of the TechFlex from fraying.

BraidedSleeving-7.jpg~original

I also threaded a rubber grommet onto the sleeved wire which will be covered in an upcoming "UPDATE". ;)

BraidedSleeving-10.jpg~original

On the business side, I used some more Scotch 35 to keep the end from fraying and also helps keep the sleeving pulled tight against the wire bundle.

BraidedSleeving-8.jpg~original

And finally... Sleeving cables is a lot of work, I'm not going to kid you. But the results are well worth it in my opinion. Not quite done with the project yet, I'll be sure to update as it progresses. But here's a sneak peak of things to come. :)

That looks great! I am thinking of doing the same thing, since my DT is not behind a wall. Drummer are you a PC modder too? I have done similar projects and this looks way eaiser the sleeving a PSU! I love your set up.

OK good... I'll PM you my address just send me all your stuff and we will be able to build the $600 bionic-aquarium.....

It's ok... there will be more time to dedicate to setting things up. At least give us a point where we can get ideas and know the do's and don't before hand.

Go look in the LARGE tank area 180+ gallons there are some good threads in there too that show all sorts of ideas and discussions.
