drummereef's 180g in-wall build

Wow took me almost two weeks to read threw this thread. Drummereef how much would you say you have tied into this build? I just wish I could keep sps or lps alive, seems no matter what I do the seem to die.

Let's say more than I wish to disclose. Not because I don't want to, because I don't want my wife to find out. :D

What is your dosing regimen and where do you keep your NO3/PO4 levels? What happens to your corals when they are dying, RTN, STN, etc?

Sorry I did a cursory read and was looking for the mod that you did on the Next Reef bio pellet reactor. What size reactor did you use? There is a large one for sale near here, too large for my 120 but I do not have to put that much pellets in there it looks like a great candidate for a recirulating bio pellet reactor. Can you point me to the page where you did your mod? thanks in advance

well my levels seem to be all over the place, i went from having no p04, and about 5 no3 on an api test kit to about .5 p04 and 20 n03 in less than a week. no i seem to also have a slightly lower ph that is hovering around 7.8 when last week it was 8.1 or 8.2. also picking up traces of ammonia only real difference in the tank is the addition of a micro algae that has really taken off in the short time its been in there. another note that may help is that about a month or two ago I had a horrible cyno outbreak that I used red slime remover to kill. Im wondering if I started some sort of cycle. That being said my mushrooms and especially all the leathers in the tank have never looked better. But some new additions that I thought I was ready for are not faring so well such as a tongue coral which is receding and Monti cap that looks like its bleaching/pores look closed. I just added a gfo and carbon reactor today in hopes of helping with the overall water quality. other background for the tank its about 250 total gallons with a reef octopus skimmer and metal halide lighting and the calcium is currently at about 520 and the magnesium has been a touch low if i remember correctly at 1200. I would love to know your thought on how to raise the ph with out affecting the calcium. My next plan is to add some sort of tank controller to help with monitoring and automate the top off water.

I use the NextReef SMR1 BioPellet Reactor for my mod. I had NextReef drill the holes in the reactor then I finished the plumbing after I got it back from them. Most of the details can be found on page 154 of my thread. Here's a link. :)

How are you dosing Calcium and Alkalinity? I wouldn't be too concerned with that pH. You can try getting some fresh air circulating near the tank and it will come up. I would presume you had a small cycle since most of the slime-removers are essentially anti-bacterial, thus it kills off quite a bit if not all of the beneficial bacteria in the tank. This should normalize in time or you could always dose some bacteria, like Special Blend to kick-start the bacteria again. Makes sense with those nutrient levels why your softies are loving it but the SPS are not. I'd try and target PO4 less than 0.05 and NO3 below 10ppm if you can. That should make most of the corals happy I would think. Hope this helps. :)

I actually had a small break threw today, i move the monti to a new location under my 175 watt mh that are 10k verse the 20k 150 watts they were under and almost immediately the looked 100x better, I wish I would have done that two weeks ago. I guess it could be the reactor kicking in, Since I have yet to test the water again. But my tongue coral I think i need to move again to a higher flow area. Generally dose with 2 part b-ionic and once in a while kalk.

Sounds good. In general SPS require higher PAR so it makes sense you saw it perk up under the new lights. ;)

UPDATE:

Sorry for the lack of updates guys, been really busy... But I did manage to add this little guy. :) I got a new fish can you believe it??

Nice fish and great photo!

Thanks shaggss. :)

Nice Brett !! What´s your livestock at the moment ?
Are you planning on adding any more fish/inverts ??

Thanks Vlado. :) I hope to find some more Green Chromis to bolster my school, maybe another 6-8 of them. I'd also like to add a couple of clowns to add a bit of color - and they are easy to keep from what I know. I thought about adding another harem of Anthias but after losing them the last time I dunno... Have any ideas? :D At this point I'm just looking for durable/hardy fish that are easy to feed and keep. Bums me out too much when I lose one.

Currently here's what I'm keeping.

Yellow Tang
Melanurus Wrasse
Cleaner Wrasse
Diamond Goby
3x Green Chromis
Banded Coral Shrimp
