OK. so im about to order some sand and salt from somewhere. I am looking at getting somewhere close to 120 lbs of sand and enough salt for the 180. I havent decided where to order it yet, but if someone wants to piggyback with me for little to no shipping, please let me know. Ill place the order within the next week or so. Store is yet to be determined...

Looks like it will be Petsolutions.com. I have done business with them in the past and have had very good experiences. they are doing a free shipping over $99. and im already there if anyone wants to piggyback. (you may have to pick it up in winchester..

aw it aint but about an hr and a half... and dammit bro.. that is a ton of sand! what are you doing, making a beach?

Also, what do you guys run in your Calcium reactors? Aragonite or the special Calcium media? im guessing ill need to get some of that and some purple up.

The Critter has Salt as cheap as anyone (Lower for Club Members) And Chris can get you some real nice Sand for around 90 cents a Lb (Fiji Pink) If you set your reactor up correctly with Quality Media (Reborn by Julian Sprung) You won't need to waste your money on Purple Up. Any product that refuses to list it's ingredients will never get my money as it is junk. JMO.
Bill
PS My Marco rock is totally covered in Corraline Algae after only 3-4 months, And i never used a drop of Purple Up!

I also use Reborn...seems to work jsut fine.

I also am probably getting my sand locally. The local stores have as good a price. I have two 230 gallon tanks to get set up that I have beend ragging my feet on.

I gotcha.. yea, I have forgone the purple up. I read what was written and it wont help me at all.

Bill, I would love to buy the sand locally, but the cost is $104 for 120lbs of sand online and they have free shipping. (Chris is $108 and that is a 2 hour drive one way to get it). this bumps me into that category and I can get a 200 gallon bucket of Kent or Oceanic salt, The PH calibration solutions, some food... anything else I need?

where do I buy this media? MRC said I could use Aragonite sand. I was thinking I could use some of the sand I ordered.

also, the system also came with a Carbon chamber that had a small maxijet pump running it. what are yalls thoughts on that?

The issue with using Aragonite sand is that it's very fine and will clog your pump up much easier than what most all Mfg recommend these day's is Large type Media. But that alone is not the most important reason i use Quality Media, The rest are full of Phosphate and will leach this into your tank through the effluent drip. I keep lots of SPS and I saw a noticeable difference when i switched to Reborn media and the reason is where it's collected and the makeup of the coral it came from, Well worth the effort and the price is not much different than the other less quality stuff. JMHO

Ok. so where do I get this Reborn media? guess I gotta have it...unless you dont think I need to even have the reactor online without any coral in the tank.

as things are looking, this will be a FOWLR tank until the next frag swap I can go to (maybe the West TN one). I do want the coraline to get growing quicky. alot of hte rock I got still has some purple on it...

SOrry for all the questions. this is all new equipment to me, and since I have always just gone basic, there is a learning curve.

Without a high demand you really don't have to have the reactor online right away. You can keep things in line by a little Mrs Wages or 2-part until you get some SPS again.
Bill
PS you can get Reborn online too.

Reborn.... Great stuff.... Critter sells it and there are some online retailers (cheaper online, but by the time you pay shipping and what not its easier to by it local and support our LFS)

You won't need a reactor with reborn in it until you get some stock of corals in there.

OK. ill get it cleaned up but wont get it running for a while. Unfortunately no telling when ill get coral in the tank...

HMMM>. what kind of sand to get. the finer Ocean Direct Oolitic or the Ocean Direct Original. the oolitic is a uniform size and shape sugar type sand. 0.6mm or less in size. the Original is 77% that small size with some larger chunks mixed in....

what are your thoughs??

I got my reborn for $27.99 from Foster and Smith aquatics. Shipping was $8.99. This was still cheaper than the base price at the critter, not to mention it's $8.99 flat rate shipping (sometimes cheaper) so I got other stuff at the same time, and didn't have to pay tax. Saved probably $40 on that order over the LFS. Very easy, I didn't leave my chair :)

yea, that's why im getting my sand and salt online. I cant believe that Pet Solutions is going to do free shipping. but ive taken the sale all the way to the CC entry and it still says Zero. im ordering 120lbs which should give me a nice 1.5" sandbed. I am a firm believer in shallow beds and the trouble a deep bed can cause. Heck, my last tank was 10 yrs old with the shallow bed, why change...

Ill deal with the reactor in a month or two. Sounds kinda pointless with no corals. I just need the coraline to explode for a bit.

Very true. As I order most of my stuff online. But when ordering just that it would have only saved me $6. Don't forget the tax is offset with the discount ;) Then I would have had to wait a few days for it. I had it in my hands the day I setup the reactor, priceless  What else is nice is if we start buying certain speciality items from the LFS they will carry it.

Well, I was quoted $42.99 for the Reborn after discount. That plus 9.25% tax is $46.96. $27.99+ $8.99 shipping is $36.98, so I still save $10, not counting my time and gas. I'd rather wait a couple days, just to save $10 and gas and time.

In the rare reactor emergency I guess the ability to obtain it immediately is worth it, otherwise, I'll wait. :)

Zach, You got quoted the wrong price It sells for 32.99 B4 your club Discount, That's the sticker price that was on all 6 buckets i just bought for Mel/Dustin. And I asked Chris If that was the regular price because Mikey (Who works at AC told me 28.00 when I called about it.) Either way It's nice to support the LFS B4 we don't have any more In this Bad Economy, Times are tough for all small bus.
Bill's 2 cents...

That's out of an e-mail I have from Chris.

Pure oolite is way to fine in my opinion. I always had sand storms with that stuff. I found the perfect sand to be the Caribsea Seaflor Special Grade. Nice small and big grains that wont blow around too much.

oolic is good for a RDSB in a low flow area.

http://caribsea.com/pages/products/dry_aragonite.html under special grade reef sand. not the big shell looking stuff.
