Well i have been looking for a Nikon D50 for a good price and finally came across a refurbished one for 430, the cheapest i have found. Then someone told me that DSLR's only have a certain number of pics they can take and advised me to get a new D50 instead. is this true? do they only last a certain number of pictures? thanks

so how long would the camera last for the average beginner? and would buying a reconditioned one be alright? and thanks for the reply.

I bought my camera used off of ebay and have taken about 15,000 pictures in the 3 years that i've had it. I know most people dont think about it, but 50,000 pics is a TON of pictures! If you can afford a new camera then buy it, but if you can live with the fact that its new then by all means buy the used one. Now that being said, a brand new d50 is going for 449.99 on bhphotovideo.com. So you're really only saving 19 bucks over a new d50. I would say that its not worth it just to save 19 bucks. You just cant beat a brand new camera. Cause you know that you'll be the first person that has touched it. Yeah sorry, i get a little sentimentile about my cameras. haha

And thats my 2 cents...

I just realised something... the 449.99 dollar D50 didn't come with a lense... did the refurbished D50 one come with a lense?

i would stray far away from refurbs- just my experience. also, you are more likely to drop, lose, drown, have stolen, run over, ect (guilty on all accounts) your camera than wear out the shutter. my last camera lasted nearly 500,000 (half a million) photos but the shutter assembly was replaced four or five times by mack. it averaged about 100,000 frames per shutter. i ALWAYS purchase a 2nd hand warranty it is WELL WORTH the initial expense. mack cam covers just about anything that can go wrong other than intentional abuse. beware of where you purchase them some places will charge 300 bucks and others 75.

I bought a refurb Nikon D1X a while back and have several thousand shutter activations so far. Works like a champ, too bad it's old stuff now.

the math for the life of a dslr . . .

50,000 frames (a conservative estimate)
over the corse of say 2 years (730 days)
50,000 frames / 730 days = 68.5 frames per day

most average hobby photographers don't shoot nearly 68.5 photos everyday for two years strait. so it fair to say baring any terrible accidents your camera should last at least 2 years.

Keep in mind that the 50K number that I threw out is an average for consumer level DSLRs. Many are rated for much higher than that. The rating is for the shutter (which can be replaced), the rest of the camera is fine.
