DSPS tank from Thailand (1000 gallon+)

They are indeed gorgeous fish. I hope Im not becoming too pessimistic, but I see a lot of aggression in this short video. All the circling is confrontation. I, honestly attribute this to being in a small QT tank, and hope it will resolve once they are in the big tank. However, I see the bigger concern being the two existing achilles in your tank. They will not like, nor tolerate, the additions, IMO. I really do hope that Im wrong.

I have a Purple tang and a Sohal tang in one of my tanks.
The Purple was there first since the Sohal was introduced there has been what looks to be aggression (circling putting fins straight out darting at each other)from the Purple towards the Sohal the Sohal pretty much just stood his ground.
Now 7 months later they both still acted up feeding time mostly and on various occassions but nothing harmfull.
I have fellow reefers with multiple tangs in thier tanks yes you get an aggressive one time to time but they seem to adapt.
You end up with a King of the hill Tang and the rest stay away from Him.
Good luck Ching I think it will be ok in a tank that big.
Once my 360 tank is ready I'm adding a Achilles and maybe a few others right now the 120 holding tank aint big enough for a 3rd Tang

Not to threadjack, but I had a feeling you will have worse luck sooner or later, especially with a sohal. 7 months is not a long time. They regularly get meaner and meaner and meaner. Furthermore, your fish are obviously conflicting, if they still square off. This translates to stress, which translates to susceptibility for disease. I am not saying it is impossible. I know it is. I am merely saying that in Chings case, he tried three achilles, and one of them died from aggression, even in his enormous tank. These are notoriously aggressive fish, and they are showing it now (albeit mildly). I merely hope that the same thing doesnt happen again.

I agree that the Achilles are very aggressive but with 7 of them the aggression can be despursed and I think if you put them on a temporary tank within the tank for couple of days they will get use to each other and the new Achilles will acclimate so much better
I am using this Method on my tank and it's working well

I do not disagree. Social acclimitization is very important IMO, and is way too often overlooked. Here is what I use (for single fish, obviously):

Like I said, I hope I am wrong, and everything works out, but my gut impression doesnt agree. JMHO.

No, you are exactly right.
What I am doing is not the right thing.
You can hate me for this incident. I can admit it.

I dont see anything wrong with this. I have a 220 and have a bunch of tangs in it. I did a school of yellow tangs years back and put 2 in at first and they fought for a bit then swam together after months I thn added a few more all large show size like the achillies in your video. they acted like this at firs but the turned into a school of fish... People ofton forget that tangs are a schooling fish. I feel once you get them in the big tank they will choose a pecking order then they will get along. I have had my yellow tangs my 10in black tang the unicorn tang my 2 hippos and the sohal all in a 220 and they got along.... I have downsized from a crash a couple years ago to everything other then the school of yellows to 2 yellows. your tank is amazing and I wish I had the room for something like that in my house! Great job keep the pictures coming and videos too! Following along good job.

Sorry, I disagree. First off, tangs shoal, they dont school. And, as mentioned, achilles dont shoal except in certain occasions. And comparing yellow to achilles' is an innaccurate comparison. They are apples and watermelons in terms of their aggressiveness.

I apologize for this ancillary discussion. I just feel that if people are going to make claims, they should be discussed.

HAHA ok well im giving my personal exp. I have had no problem with this unlike you that does..... I have a much smaller tank then this and have had many tangs with no issues. yes tangs are schooling fish yes sohal tangs and yellow are diff yes. I have had some of the most exotic tangs incluging the achillies the black the sohal and whatnot. I have a pair of crosshatch triggers in the tank as well with no issues. its my exp and have not had a problem sorry you do but the fish play well. Please feel free to discuss I am open to your exp...

I think most of the tangs are aggressive some more than others but it will always depend on a individual
I had 3 very large purple tang that gets bullied by my blue hippo tang . The common conseption regarding hippo tang is less aggressive but clearly not the case here also purple tang can't shoal together with yellow tang I have 3 Purple tang, 2 yellow tang, orange shoulder , powder brown, sailfin , 2 blue tang, and 2 naso on my old 300 gallons although they only lived together for 6 months
I know Achilles are far more aggressive the purple tang but if Ching chai achilles gets along now I am pretty sure it will get along in the tank too but the 2 dominant Achilles should be monitored if possible they should be socially acclimated to the 5 new Achilles

Ching chai I still looking forward seeing them all together on your tank

I would suggest you research what the difference between schooling and shoaling is. There is a difference, and tangs do not, in fact, school. They shoal. You arent understand what Im saying, either. If you had a group of yellows, this is FAR different than having a group of achilles. FAR FAR FAR different. Acilles are exponentially more aggressive than yellows, as a generalization for the species. I appreciate that you have had "success", but it in no way, means that this is the rule. Especially since you are in the extreme minority with this "success".

I always believe that there is always exception to the RULE Mr. Ching Chai will always be the guy that is gutsy enough to go for it!
I believe I am too on my own little ways for not changing my water on a sps tank!

Well im sorry you are angry here I am not in a dispute with you. I appericiate the tank we are discussing here. If you want a debate email me but this tank is amazing! Yes I had luck and I had sucess if you want to just flame people I have no time for it and dont care! please if you want to chat ill talk but I have no need for your debate. I have had my exp and appericiate this tank. I really dont care about what you think you know. I have seen things and dont care what you think about fish as I have seen certian things. If you think you know it all then you probally do right?????? im not arguing as you already know it all. later please leave my ecp alone

Who's angry? Not me! Who did I flame? I merely commented against statements you made. If you cant or dont want to discuss them more, that is unfortunate.

I agree, Chings tank is amazing.

Been following this thread since the setup and although I think it is a great tank in terms of design and how much great work and attention to detail went into it I have to disagree here. I think the tank looks great in terms of corals but time and time again with this tank we see fish dying. I don't see anything gutsy about this at all just the assumption that because the tank is fairly large any number of normally difficult or aggressive fish can be introduced. I don't feel like going back and doing a death count but he lost plenty of fish before the QT tank was setup and then even with it we have seen plenty of beautiful Anthias and Tangs along with many other very expensive and rare fish die. Unfortunately and don't take this the wrong way but with such a large tank and access to so many rare fish it has led to some questionable choices. Even though the tank is very large by home reef tank standards it is nothing compared to what these fish see in nature and that many highly aggressive and large Tangs will most likely end up in failure.

Mr Ching please don't take this as a totally negative comment, I think you have a beautiful tank and have done some great things with it, however I feel that with tanks these size people get the impression that any number of fish is possible regardless of size and species. In my opinion this couldn't be more wrong. Like I said for a home tank it is very large but nothing compared to the wild and still with a limited amount of space and hiding spots for fish that are being harassed.

Danny in the beginning Most people said that it's impossible to keep acropora
Now almost every serious reefer has one
many of us will loss significant fish and corals in this hobby
we learn from our mistake
And make sure that we analyze what we did wrong
I am sure Mr. Ching Chai did
And please do not lock this thread again

I am sure Mr. Ching Chai did !

A type of coral and a fish are two totally different things. Years ago SPS was much more difficult because keeping water quality and proper levels of calcium, alk, mag, etc were not possible. Now we have calcium reactors, a small army of additives and dosing mixes and last but most importantly protein skimmers. All of these things made water quality and stability possible allowing for sensitive corals to be kept in captivity. I don't see however how any technological advances in the aquarium hobby will allow aggressive fish to be kept together in captivity.

Thank you guys.
I really appreciate every comments.
It is a good thing to share experience, knowledge etc.

But please don't act like a dispute instead of debate.
It makes me sick and want to stop updating this thread.
That's it!

Sorry about that Sir
Guys it's his tank! his money !his risk !
We are fortunate enough to be part of it!
So please do not ruin it for us!
