dtum's Practical Reef - 54 Gallons of Coral Jewels

Hey everyone, happy holidays. To finish off this year, here's Practical Reef at 8 month mark.

I enjoyed reading your thread. I have also been considering this tank or the 525 XL. My ideal dimensions are 60x30x20 and the 525 comes close. I presently have an established 90 so I'm not sure if I want to transfer everything over and stick with Tangs, or add another smaller tank with the same reasoning to "backup" precious SPS pieces. Reading your thread makes that decision even harder. Nice job with the build and documenting your process.

Sorry to hear about the tank crash. That really sucks. I know that you will rebuild and it will be better then ever. Your 180 is what I dream of having one day.

As some of you may know, I have experienced my first real crash last month, my prized acros have not reacted kindly to the move, I did make a few mistakes that had caused a total meltdown over the course of 24 hours. Here's a re-cap:

Good news is that I'm still in the hobby, the tank is back to normal and I'm starting almost from scratch. I might do a few things different and better this time around. Stay tuned.

Practical Reef at 15 months. 3 months after a full crash.

Thanks for posting here! I've been following you on YouTube and AquaticLog. Even though your crash was indeed tragic, the information you shared is invaluable for those of us seeking to avoid making the same mistakes. Thank you for sharing your journey!

Practical Reef is now 16 months old and it has been just over 4 months since all of the corals had been wiped out during the move.

Everything has stabilized and is now starting to show decent color. Here's the side shot.

I've also taken a photo from the same angle in the morning when the tank is lit by sun:

And this is what the tank looked like two weeks ago:

Still looking great, Dmitry! I am absolutely IN LOVE with that big blue tort, centre stage.
Fantastic job!
Do you do any maintenance on your siporax?

Thanks. Zero maintenance on siporax. And that tort is pretty much the only thing that had survived the whole crash. Yikes.

So, the benefits of a small tank allow me to drain the water with fair ease and move the tank if I wanted to. And so I did.

I'm using my Brute trash bin that holds saltwater for this.

It is time to start adding water back in

I always notice that even if the tank is perfectly level when it is empty, it may need a bit of re-shimming after the water has been added.

Time to start fooling around with lights. It does look very nice.

Where did you buy the material for light mounts?
