dtum's Pragmatic Reef - 180 Gallons of Adventure

Having run out of space with my Winterfell Reef aquarium, I've decided to take the next step.

My first plan was to go with a 225 gallon (72 x 30 x 24) that quickly ballooned up to 265 (78 x 30 x 26), it all made perfect sense. I've made a number of mock ups.

But once I got close to getting the tank I was quite surprised with the exponential complexity of going with a larger tank: electricity requirements, floor weight requirements, humidity control, noise. I did my due diligence on figuring most of it out, but decided that this is not something I'm ready for.

So I chose a more practical option, basically the next logical step. I decided to change every little thing about my current setup that I wanted with ought going overboard.

My current tank is 48 x 24 x 20. So I'll add 2 inches to the height and depth and will add 2 feet to the length. I have an internal Herbie overflow, so this one will be external Bean Animal. My stand is 36'' high which is great for viewing it while standing, but I don't enjoy it as much when sitting down, so the new stand will be 32'' high.

So the new setup is 72 x 26 x 22, 180 gallons. I can re-use my Bubble King skimmer and some of the equipment from my current setup, including my lighting.

As usual, I started off by making a mock up.

The biggest concern was what to do with a stand. I wanted to get a steel stand, but even powder coated it may start to rust eventually. So over the weekend I put together a stand out of 2x4s and some 2x6s that I will later furnish professionally (or perhaps challenge myself to do it).

So that's where I'm at right now. Wish me good luck.

The tank and the stand have been delivered, I'm now adding saltwater. :)

I've decided to go with a professional made stand.

Looks very nice. I like the slightly wider and shallower dimensions than a standard 180. Who is the tank's manufacturer and can we get more pics of it?

Thanks, the tank has been built by Advanced Reef Aquatics and the stand has been built by Reef Boutique. Both are in Toronto.

I will have a lot more details and photos of the tank soon, just a bit pre-occupied with preparations.

I plan to be moving everything from my current 100 gallon tank very soon.

As for Radions, I got 4 of them setup on this tank (originally was planning for 3), and they are all setup with the wide angle option. I want to get as much brightness throughout the tank as possible, have always been a big fan of T5 lighting so I'll try to emulate that as much as possible.

Alright, here goes my first video update, enjoy.

Man, that looks so much better with the new T5's!
So much more light! And the color looks great.
Your water looks super clear, too.

Dennis, thank you. There appears to be a lot more light to the eye now, that's for sure.

As for the water being clear... I think the exact opposite, I got tons of micro bubbles in my water so up close it appears slightly murky. And I have no idea what is causing it and how to fix it. I don't see any bubbles in the sump, so it can't be the skimmer or overflow. Part of me thinks it might be photosynthesis, but I am just not sure.

dtum, the new tank looks great and hopefully the corals will recover. I am confused about your lighting though. Are you using T-5's in the video or is the lighting from your Radions?

I am using ATI 8-bulb fixture in that video. Going old school for this reef for now.

It's been almost two weeks with the new T5s, so far I have not seen any changes in coral coloration and the corals that have been browned out are still in pretty bad shape.

Been playing around with a bunch of T5 combos, so many options. One great discovery for myself so far is two have the right choice for the 2 bulbs to run for dusk/dawn. Tried various combinations, but finally have found the sweet spot: a combo of 1 ATI blue plus and 1 KZ Superblue. I've been yearning for an LED supplement, but now with this combo on I'm not even sure I'll need it. We'll see.

Overall very pleased with the progress. Parameters have been quite stable, I did see my phosphate start to climb but have addressed that with brining GFO online.

Now it is time to exercise some patience - just sit back and hope for a hint of colour to show up in my acros.

Here's a quick update photo:

My focus for the next few weeks is to improve coloration and coral placement.
