Dumb acclimation/transfer questions.

lcs

It's Spring!!!!!!!
I've never had tangs before, but am planning on having a couple in my 125. All the fish I've had are pretty small and I acclimated them in the bag in the sump so the temp was kept up and then I would either scoop them out with my hand or a net.

What's the protocol for a tang? With bigger fish, I've seen that people have the fish in a bucket. I'm assuming you need a heater? How do you transfer a tang to the tank? I don't imagine people use their hands, do they?

Told ya they were dumb! :smokin:

If they aren't being shipped and coming from a LFS to your QT, I drip acclimate in a bucket then carefully pick the fish up with my hand. I never use nets. On fish that bite, sting, really big (like my 3ft eel) I use a rubber trout net, fins can't get caught in that.

Ive always been more concerned that the stressed fish would burn itself on a heater so Ive never put one in the bucket. Just float and then drip. If the house is remotely close to tank temp the water shouldnt cool too much in the acclimation time.

That being said I find it easier to match the salinity of my QT to shipping water or LFS water so I can minimize the drip time.

+1 Emphasis on the "QT" part. It sounds like quarantine isn't in the picture. Huge mistake.

I always QT, not to worry. :D I've never done tangs so I was wondering how tangs were handle as far as acclimation and transfer. Thanks for the ideas so far!
