Duncan coral

lost ball in high weeds
I got a good deal on 25 heads of duncan coral. I was wondering where is the best placement for them. I have a 110 x-high (30") with 400w 20k lights. Should I put them low on the rockwork or on the sand? Any other tips for growing/fragging this coral. Thanks

25 heads that must be a nice piece!!. I recently got a 2 headed one that was doing poorly in the store mid- high in the rocks under MH.
Brought it home and placed it low in the rock work and in a matter of 2 days it looks like a new coral. Much more polyp expansion and color under the same intensity of MH the store had. I also have mine in a low to med flow area depending on the cycle of the wavemaker and it seems to like the staggered flow also. I read that high flow can cause it to retract.

Mine will have about the same flow as yours probably. I have a couple sureflow mods on a wavemaker higher up in the tank.

Congrats. I also just got some duncans myself (9 heads 2 days ago) and placed them low in the tank. They came off of a frag rack pretty close to their 20K MHs in a surge tank. I tried to place them in the front of the tank but I think there's too much flow since they haven't really opened up yet. I've since moved them to a lower flow area and it's starting to come out a bit more but not as much as at the LFS. It has however started taking bits of cyclops and mysis so we'll see.

Duncans are the fastest growing LPS I have ever seen. I bought one 2" stalk two month ago that only had one had.

With daily feeding it now has 4 fully developed heads and at least 8 smaller ones growing out. The amount you feed dictates the growth rate of this coral.

Once everyone figures this out duncans will be going for a lot less. I have found a small variety of them, though. I have read that most end up turning green when matured.

I have seen some colonies that are pink and white with smaller polyps that are less than an inch in diameter. In my opinion, these are quite boring.

The most beautiful ones that I have seen in person have 2"+ diameter heads when fully expanded and have bright green centers and a dark green body.

I was lucky enough to get a hold of one of these, pic is about a month old:

Lately they have been going to $20 per head but I think that is outrageous now that I have found out how fast they grow. treny, you have the same one I do it looks like.

My 4-headed duncan is WAY open and in the highest flow possible... well, as high a flow as a Koralia Nano can give. It's about 3 inches from the outlet and doesn't seem to care.

Logzor,
Thats exactly what the one I bought looks like with the same coloration. Expanded it about the size of a quarter or so.

I got my 9 heads for $120 at the LFS (atlantis aquarium) so that's about $13/head? Which is a lot better than the other LFS' posting them for $50/head!

I think they still have another frag/small colony for the same price so ya might wanna go check'em out if anyone's interested. I think it's a fair price compared to the other LFS'.

I'm still amazed at what some LFS are charging for these. There's a fish store local to here selling them for $95/polyp (and they have a waiting list for them lol). But I was lucky enough to find a one-polyp frag of em for $16. :D
