Have a two holes in my Duncan that were not there a couple days ago. Picture is hard to tell because of the way the coral is positioned the picture is of the smaller hole. Have a larger one on the opposite side. Any ideas?

Another picture you can see the Duncan head closed up but the left is the hole that wasn't there a few days ago with looks like brown tentacles coming out of it

Can't really tell either from your photos. Are the holes on the base of the coral? That is where they spawn heads of I'm not mistaken

Yeah I have a few hermit crabs. I don't think it's them because it is right below the head. I mean I don't watch the tank 24/7 but I have never seen them climbing up on the Duncan.

Do you think the tissue got scratched or damaged and that is just some hairy algae growing on the bare skeleton?

I have noticed my clowns are picking at it. Thought clowns are supposed to be reef safe!!

They are...maybe they are just eating algae growing on it? If the duncan is still extended and eating when you feed it I wouldn't worry too much

Yeah so my guess is it got damaged somehow and now a bit of algae is growing and when it closes up at night the clowns come around to nibble.

Mine fell over on a rock and the skeleton got scratched and now it has algae and some vermetids there. it is sad and frustrating but the duncan is still alive.

You could always take it out of the water and inspect if you are curious

Clowns do pick at Duncans in my experience, though they don't generally do much more than temporarily annoy the particular head
