Duplex sump concept

Question for Mr. Wilson

Question for Mr. Wilson

I have a 70g "Duplex Refugium" that is currently processing about 1200gph from two sources 1) Skimmer effluent 2) main return supply. My system is 325g total capacity running about 1800gph total circulation. My question is this, Will flow rate through the fuge effect it's ability to assimilate po3. I have a good crop of Culerpa which I harvest about once a month, it seems to thrive OK, but I cannot reduce the po3 below 10-15 ppm. If I divert about 1/2 of that flow, will the slower exchange of water through the fuge give it more time to assimilate more po3? Thanks.............Budster:bum:

Nownow. Two different things. One is for tiny particles aka polishing. The other is for nutrients

all of the above

all of the above

Im running a DSB, cryptic rubble and DSB, turf scrubber, and fuge.

I haven't had a chance to setup the duplex sump yet however I still intend on doing so.

This thread has motivated me to reorganize my fuge. Three weeks ago I did a thorough cleaning of my fuge, harvested some algae and implemented the duplex concept. At the time I was also battling some red cyano & had a nutrient balance issue with undetectable nitrate and PO4 at ~0.15. I started nitrate dosing at the same time I implemented the duplex fuge based on what I read in this thread. So far my chaeto is growing much faster with better color in the shallow growing area; maybe this is also resulting from the nitrate dosing. I'm guessing it is going to take many months for some critters to start growing on my egg crate structure. I'll report back in a few months.

One month update - I'm dosing .5ppm sodium nitrate daily and PO4 is reading between 0.00 -0.02 regularly. I pull about 1/2 gal of chaeto weekly which is about 1/2 my crop. Bottom of the fudge is somehow staying very clean. No visible detritus build up. Nothing growing on the egg crate yet, but more pod/mysis than ever.
