Durso Drain

Hi guys. I have the tank plumbed and am leak testing. Looks like one of the bulkheads has a drip, but besides that everything is going well. I do have a question about my durso drain (or maybe just plumbing in general).

I'm using a Quiet One 4000 pump. It has a valve on it that lets me adjust the flow. When it is shut the output should be around 300 gph. Here is a picture of the water line and the durso in the overflow.

If I crank it up, it is closer to 660 GPH. The water line is higher, and he return area in the sump is lower, which I expected. What I didn't expect is the water level in the overflow box to be lower. Any ideas on why this is?

I'll comment on the pic later tonight but just FYI- Quite One pumps have start up issues. Make sure it comes back on every time you shut it off. I have two 6000 and 3000 and both are now pumps i only use for water changes. I will never buy a Quite One pump again.

I am probably wrong but the fist thing that comes to mind is higher volume water from the pump into tank and into the overflow area causes more vacuming when that larger amount of water is falling and so is pulling water down faster and causing the water level in the box to be lower?

yes the vacuum effect will help pull the water downward faster but it does have a limit so 600gph is probably max.

Hmm okay. It has seemed to be doing fine, but I'll keep an eye on it.

You can always dial it down to 500 gal/hr to be safe, but I think the current rate is fine. Dialing down the pump will use less energy so it's not a bad thing. I just installed my Laguna 1500 pump and loving it. itts rated 1500 gal/hr 100 watt but with the 6' head it is running at about 800 gal/hr at 60 watt which is awesome.

The thing that concerns me is that the level in the tank is higher with more flow. The tank is not draining as fast as water is coming in, or it's too close to the equal point. The drain should happily accept whatever the pump puts out, and the tank level should not rise.

Seems a bigger hole might be in order.
