Durso Pipe

Im trying to quite my overflow box and saw a durso pipe on Jbarone tank and was impressed. I tried my hand at making one but when I installed it the water in my tank rose and almost over flowed. Also the return area in my sump was almost dry. I know they work but i need a little help.

you have to drill a hole in the top of the stand pipe. start small, about one eighth inch. drill the hole, then re-install the pipe. if it continues to overflow, drill the next size up. continue until it stops overflowing. you may have to go as large as one quater, so dont give up. i hope this solves the problem, but it could be something else. mine would suck the overflows dry before i drilled the hole.

I tried a couple different sizes and they still do the same thing, Maybe ill mess with the flow of the pump and try to get them in sync

I never trust the adjusting the flow of my pump to keep a return from overflowing. if it fails to stay steady you can easily come home to an overflowing tank.

You could have to small of an outlet hole at the base of the pipe or using to small of pipe?

And in theory a larger hole will make the water rise, you drill a larger hole if it is emptying the tank to fast.

What size bulk head do you have in your overflow? What size is your return pump? You can try removing the cap at the top of the Durso to see if it works with the amount of flow you have from your return pump. If it does not, I think there may be something else wrong. Could you post a pic of your setup?

1" bulkhead with a 9.5 mag. Tried to remove the cap but it was noisier than without the pipe. I read that I should have used 1-1/4 PVC. I used 1" I dont have a digital camera and with Millenium OS it probably wouldnt work anyway. Its a piece of poop.

From what I read i have to use 1-1/4 and than reduce it down to the 1" bulkhead. Whats the point?

Jbarone, it hasnt opened yet but its a beatiful piece. Really ads a punch of color to my tank. put it right in the middle. Thanks!

Can the bulkhead handle the full flow of the mag 9.5 without the Durso?

Yes but its so loud I cant hear the tv. I have a ball valve on the return line to dial it back if needed,

I run a ball valve on my out put from my pump and also on the drain pipe. I adjust the two until they work in sync, I was having the same issues at one point the ball valves should help. The main thing is to not restrict the flow to the pump, only the output from the pump.

By doing that you are creating back pressure therefore the flow is reduced and the suction is reduced. Therefore you are not sucking any air down the pipe and are incrasing the ammount of water that can flow through the pipe...

Water does not have to share the space with air and you get more volume...

I got it to Work!!! After messing with it for about 30 minutes I got. Also my drain line from the overflow was gurgling so i drilled a vent hole in it and it worked like a charm. Thanks guys your the best.

I had to use a smaller one. was actually the original one I made. I guess I had more time to actually to mess with it. Im talking about the Durso pipe.
