Hi . I am doing a really quick setup to hold things over until I get my tank going. Quick question. Is the top of the durso crook suppose to be above or below tank level? Thanks

No. Not the straight up with the cap . The candy cane looking version with the hole in the crook. Is water suppose to cover that top hole?

Maybe the link will help. I am not quite clear on the part you are talking about. I run durso's on my tank. The "Crook" part the water goes into is about 3/4 submerged on mine. I do not have a hole drilled in that part just the very top cap part.

What is the purpose of the hole in the down turned ell? For the record...that's two 90 degree ells. Two 45's equals 90 degrees.

I am glad someone stays on top of things. :frog: Just guessing it's a siphon breaker. Not completely sure. Maybe someone else will clear it up.
I don't like the looks of that and wouldn't run it on my tank. The design of the Durso should always have air allowed in the drain. The ideal setup would have an end cap at the top with an air hole and a strainer on the bottom facing intake. A snail or anything covering that hole would create a full siphon. Which could send too much water to your sump and possibly flood. Another flaw with the Durso is the air hole must be periodically cleaned as salt creep will build and limit air flow, again to the point of creating a full siphon.
If you want a full siphon then you need a second emergency drain. Which then the whole system would become a Herbie drain system.

Set it up herbie. Much quiter and will move some water at full siphon. I'm a idiot at handyman stuff and if your tank allows I would just take those 90s off and go herbie
It's probably two holes, one on either side designed to ensure the pipe does not air lock. The overflow kits that I got with my marineland RR tank look just like with one exception being an air vent hole on the top.
