Dusky Wrasse Photos

I am trying to decide whether to get a dusky wrasse. Some of the pictures I've seen are stunning while others are not quit as impressive.

I could be that the muted looking one were females or juveniles, but I couldn't say for sure.

If you've got a dusky, please post a picture!

i have a dusky wrasse and does not have colours like that. I must have a female.

That's a pretty extreme example. Don't expect to ever see one nicer than that. Also note the lighting is perfect in that photo to accentuate things quite a bit.

You should expect something more along the lines of what's on the Live Aquaria photo.

I've been looking for one of these for a while in LA, I haven't come across any...I know you're not in LA but where are you looking to get yours from?

Where ever I can, lol. I've actually been thinking of ordering from liveaquaria if they get one in. I'm not a fan of most bay area LFS. I like one place in Sacramento, but its a bit of a haul.

Thanks for the input. I sort of suspected that might be the case. Still a nice looking fish though. Love the shape of this one.

Have you owned one by any chance? Curious have they stack up aggression wise to other halichoeres.

They are a little more aggressive than a melanurus. Usually the little black/dark grey ones are what are offered for sale. The color on the fins and tail of a terminal male are amazing and stand out more in person than in photos, but the body coloring is closer to LA photo.

i had one in a 90 gallon for over a year, it was a great fish and got along with all my other fish including other wrasse, but after a year he grew from 2.5-3" to 4.5-5" and was becoming the boss of the tank, i re homed him to a friend with a bigger 6' tank and hes still doing great, they sleep in the sand so you'll need to make sure you have a sand bed.

I would argue it's much more a matter of the camera flash rather than post-editing.

I don't know whether the picture was photoshopped or not, but what I do find with my wrasses is that they often look much more colorful in photos than with the naked eye. Agree with prior post, it may be a function of the flash illuminating the fish in a non-normal way.

My dusky is a very attractive fish that looks almost exactly like the photo on LA.
