Dwarf Angel Fish..... Any Know About Them?

I love the way angel fish look but I know my tank is not big enough for one as they will grow out of it. We are talking about a larger tank but that will not happen for a year or two. I have come across Flame Dwarf and Coral Beauty Dwarf and was wondering if anyone knows anything about them. Angelfish can NOT be put with anemone but it says that the flame dwarf is reef safe on the internet site I looked at, and to add the coral beauty dwarf at my own risk. I don't have any yet but would like clown fish and know they like certain anemone.

In general ALL angelfish need to be approached with caution when it comes to coral safety. While some flame angles may be model citizens, others will not. Their behavior is driven by their DNA more than anything else. They eat coral in the wild, so even a model citizen may wake up one morning with the taste for expensive coral.

In any case, you will likely attract a better discussion in the "new to the hobby" forum or the fish forum... A lot of the folks over here in DIY ignore threads like this I have asked a mod to move the thread.

Why not? I have yet to have a tank that did not have an anemone and a dwarf and larger angels in in the last 20 years and there was never an issue.

Now that's a good question! People come and go, discussions come and go. And usually there is no generally accepted answer.

But to the original question . . . it all depends. I have seen large and dwarf angels that were relatively well behaved until all of a sudden, bingo, they love to munch.

Yes, I have done research about the fish and when it come to normal angel I read more that they will eat the anemones, but when it come to dwarfs no one can agree. And most placed you buy from will tell you what you want to hear or what will get you to buy it. So I came here to ask people that have first hand knowledge about dwarf angels.

One of the reasons that no one agrees on the dwarfs is that there is individual variablity, even within a species. Some species are more prone nipping at anemones, zoas, etc. (such as the Eibli), and some are less prone to it (such as the Flame). But even within the species that are less prone to eating your reef, there are some individuals that will look at your anemones and zoas as an all you can eat smorgasbord. Hence, the only accurate answer to your question is that's a gamble. While the Flame might be the safer bet, it's still a gamble.

The anemone eating isn't accurate either, I'm sure some on here have had problems but the two I mentioned above wouldn't eat a anemone if it was the last thing one earth for them to eat. I also have a emperor that doesn't touch a thing, no anem eating and I have a huge sponge the size of a softball that the angel doesn't touch either and they eat sponge in the wild

My recommendation is to try it if you really want one. If it doesn't work out, IME, angelfish, being as curious as they are, are one of the easiest fish to trap and remove from a tank.

I have a tiny coral beauty and a RBTA and it shows no interest in it. I've not seen it bother my corals either - I have mostly softies and some zoas....as stated, dwarf angels are reef safe with caution meaning that you may end up with an individual that has a taste for corals but you may also end up with one that doesn't bother anything. I suggest to keep them well fed so they are less likely to munch on other things. I've never read where they are prone to munch on anemones...I would think the nem's sting would be a natural deterant (sp) to that...

All of the Pygmy angels I've had at some point or another developed a taste for some type of coral. Mostly soft coral and fleshy LPS coral.

I have multiple anemones (rose bubble tip) and they do not bother them at all.
