I would like to open up a discussion on keeping dwarf angles in a 40BR...

I the past it was pretty common to keep one small angle in 40br along with a few only small fish. what are your thoughts now.

L.A suggests 50 to 70 gals.

I am considering flame, CB black nox etc.

at this point tank is empty and IF i do add one it would be last fish in.

tank is 40BR with 40BR sump & 29gal ato
tank is gonna focus on Gorgs, sponges LPS and some softies

thoughts & experiences please

My Cherub Angel is having a ball and loving my 40b. Did you know the 40b has a footprint of a 65gal only not as tall?

I kept a flame angel in a 50 for a couple years before I realized it wasn't recommended, it seems like within a few days of my discovery the flame angel went rouge and killed three of its tank mates before I could catch it.

Just make sure to have plenty of rocks as they like to pick at them. All. The. Time. Then feed a lot. And offer algae sheets. Seems to help keep aggression down and reduce coral munching to a minimum of you have corals.

Dont angels eat sponges?
Never know what they may end up picking at and end up liking. They seem to me to nip at everything. It's when they find something they like is when the munching becomes an issue. There's a decent angel end all thread on here with a running spreadsheet. Seems highly individual what each dwarf will end up liking with lemon peels liking corals the most of all the varieties.

My flame angel loves my 29g biocube SPS reef. Swims around all day picking at the rocks and exploring the nooks and crannies. I think you'll be fine with a 40B.

I think that might be why liveaquaria lists them as needing 70g. It's not like the 5g makes a diff, but maybe the extra foot on a 75 does? I know LA isn't the be all and end all, but it was the same when they upp'ed the size for yellow tangs from 75 to 100, sending people to a new footprint.

I don't have any angels, just pondering tank sizes. I think the more experience someone has, the more wiggle room they can find in the recommendations, so as a noob I play by the book.

I wouldn't put one of the larger dwarf angels in there like the bi-color that could get up around 6" but something like the cherub would be better getting up around 3".

I've got three right now(flame, coral beauty, and bicolor) and all three swim every square inch of my 180 tank nipping at every bit of rock I have. Personally I wouldn't put any of them in anything under a 40b and that I would restrict what goes in until 75g or bigger is hit.

Vivid recommends min 30 gal for Cherub Angel and 60 gal for Flame Angel.

I have one really nice pink sponge growing on a large piece of live rock and my Cherub totally leaves it alone. So at least I can tell you that mine doesn't eat sponges. I'm really surprised he doesn't.

Have you decided on which you are going to get, the Flameback or the Cherub? I really like the Flameback too.. But I do like all angelfish and butterflyfish.
