E.T.S.S 500 Setup

Just picked one up on here, lookin for advice. Running 1056 gallon pump, in sump at the moment.

Is there a manual for this product? How have u set it up? Thanks in advance!

I ran 1 for a while in sump then after reading that it would perform better outta sump i ran it that way didnt notice much of a diffrence. Pressure rated pumps is the only way to get top performance outta these skimmers imo

I'm running a reef devil. Not a bad skimmer. I've owned 2 needle wheels and like how the ETSS performs better.

Quick question, i have it set up and it has "kicked in" but if i seal the top of the cup to keep the foam from spewing out, it keeps the air from escaping and preasurizes the chamber making water pour out of the air intake. Anyone know how to prevent this? Was thinking about hookin a line up to the over flow connection and put it in a coke bottle!

Also is there an older version of the 500? Lookin at the site mine looks like 600 as it has the external down draft tube. Just curious!

Yeah, those skimmers are really made to drain into something... You cannot seal it or it kills the skimmer, in fact that is how the ETSS waste collectors work, they use a ping pong ball that seals the air exit when the cup is full.. Basically stops the skimmer, but keeps it from overflowing skimmate too... Drain the hose into a mason jar, or similar if you dont want to spring for their waste containers. Make sure whatever it is lets enough air out unobstructed for best performance. If you drop the waste hose a little bit into the container, when skimmate gets high enough it will slow down the skimmer, though not completely shut it off.

These skimmers are not made to be gravity fed, performance would be horrible. They really need a good pressure rated pump to perform. While the pumps are a bit more expensive to run than say a needlewheel, the return is worth it. They do an excellent job when set up correctly.

My skimmer has been running for about 1.5 weeks now, its not really pulling out alot of liquid. it is foaming good but i expected alot more out of it.. I am gonna try and tweak it, as its producing really dry foam. Its made about 1/5 of a coke bottle of liquid skimmate in this time, any ideas, for owners where is your water line set, can u give me a picture?? Thanks in advance!!
