Eastside RMS Closing

Just received this email from Mike D'Aversa from RMS:

"Hello,
I just wanted to let everyone know that we recently sold our willoughby store location. We would like to thank everyone that supported us these last 19 years. Thank You very much."

It's not that I bought any fish or corals (they never looked good to me) or dry goods (too expensive) from there, but it was always good for some CUC or frozen food.

Someone please open up a decent LFS on the Eastside of town.

Chuggy - how's Jurassic these days?

Stopped in there from time to time and nothing ever really looked that good, especially their salt water livestock. It's still sad to see another local fish store go out business.

i believe it is now "Johns Aquarium". i called there looking for something and thats how they answered there phone. they said they kept all the same people so i wont be going in for livestock but occasionally they had some part i couldnt find elsewhere

I stop in Jurassic from time to time.

Their prices are high on a lot of items.

For a clump of calurpa they charge $20.00 and they had a Flame Hawkfish there recently that was about 25.00 overpriced.

That brings them now down to one, from 3. The pets choice on p. valley and broadview, used to be RMS as well, although they havn't changed much either since the name change.

stan ive tossed the idea around in my head so many times but with all these places going under i don't think its a very profitable business now a days. I bet it was before the internet though.

well at least they just are not going to close the store up, even though i wouldn't buy any live stock from them anymore it was kind of nice to grab food and small supplies when needed, especially when they are only 2 minutes from my work its easy to stop by on way home from work

well just remember many of these places fail not based on price but based on the their service... most of us will pay a few bucks more for somethingto have the experience of someone waiting on us and answering questions... the reason why people do not come back is the service...

This could actually be a good thing. I guess it really depends on what the new owner's philosophy is. Personally, I think RMS has been in a steady decline since the mid 90's so just about anything would mark an improvement. Last time I was in there, one of those racks looked like it was ready to come down.

hopefully the new store owner will improve everything and teach the employees how to take care of the fish. i have been pretty disgusted some times walking down the aisles and seeing all the dead fish especially in the saltwater section, and the few fish i did buy from them all got ick and died few days later. i guess only time will tell, ill keep stopping in there from time to time after work and see if they have improved any

Drove by there this morning. they're Having a Grand Opening Sale. I'm going to stop by later today and see whats on sale...

I was there Friday night. They are having a clearance type of sale, with what looks like a full flush of the inventory. The saltwater section was bare except for one or two things. I met John and he seems enthusiastic, but there was not much to buy there at the time. Anyway it was 30% off dry goods and 50% off livestock.

Supposedly they have another store that is freshwater only somewhere near the old Aquarium Adventure.

I stopped by there on saturday as well, and was pretty surprised to see new management. Exterior was being painted, but that's no indicator of inside. I browsed to check prices and see if anything worthwhile. Didn't buy anything.

I know the new owner John, who previously owned "Neptune's Corner" that was in Slavic Village. Primarily a FW guy, so i'm not sure whether he's going to maintain the SW section or not. His westside store primarily caters to smaller tanks. His favorite thing to show people is to feed crayfish to his oscars...

It will be interesting to see how he does, since he is helpful and consumer minded.

Now that you mention it I recognize him. I used to go to Neptunes Corner back in college when I got my first freshwater fish. I bought ten pirahnas from him and sold them back when they got out of control big.

He had a big parrot if I remember. I wonder if thats moving into the new place with him.

If he does not maintain the saltwater he wont see me again, thats for sure. Plus its a giant store to fill with guppies and cichlids.

Although pure speculation on my part but it sounds doubtful that he would put a lot of effort into SW if its not his expertise. Although the margins are probably higher, so are the losses.

Is it me or does the east side have the "maloik"? SW stores just don't seem to make it on this side of town.

When I was there yesterday, I did notice that the frag tank and the tank above were cleaned. Hopefully they will pay more attention to their SW stock.

Went to John's Aquarium last night to check it out, and they had just gotten a shipment of saltwater stuff in. All livestock 50% off. He got a lot of stuff in compared to what RMS used to get in. Lots of shrimp and fish. Stinks that I got there at the same time they were acclimating.
