Ebay MH bulbs

Is everything on the LSE ebay page Plusrite? If not, how do you know what they are?

I have an M80 HQI ballast running an Ushio 10k DE right now, does anyone know how it compares the Plusrite 10k DE? I don't like very blue bulbs. I thought the Phoenix was too blue.

Interesting thread. I just picked up a set of Plusrite 175w SE 20k bulbs to give them a shot and see how they look in person.
In the past I've always ponied up the money for the high-end stuff, but it seems like several people are reporting acceptable results with the Plusrites.
One thing I've noticed is that most folks running into issues are using the DE bulbs.
I had been wanting to switch to a mogul base anyway, so I went ahead and ordered reflectors.
If I don't like the bulbs, I'll just switch to something else, but it's worth giving these a chance given the huge price difference.
One thing I don't understand is why everyone is ordering through eBay. There are several online vendors that sell the same bulbs for less than what I've been able to find on eBay. The one I purchased from even included a $5 off coupon in the box to go toward my next purchase.
My plan was to install the 175's, then find a 660 and add a couple VHO lamps for a little extra punch.
We'll see how it goes. I'll post some pics once I get the lights installed (probably Friday before I'll have time).

Bumping an old thread because I didn't see much info on the Plusrite 22k bulbs. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I run the 20k bulbs. I have:

3x Plusrite DE 250HQI's over the 125
1x Plusrite Mogul 175w 20k (formerly over my 29gal, soon to go over the fuge).

My impression is this:

The 10k bulbs are a bit more yellow than pure white. The 14k bulbs are more whitish, think 10k. The 20k bulbs have a nice white/blue color to them, think 14k. I'd put the Plusrite 20k color closer to a Phoenix 14k in color.

I haven't taken PAR readings, as I don't have a meter. But as far as budget bulbs go, they work -great-. For the price point, I wouldn't hesitate to give them a go. You can replace these bulbs every 6 months and still pay as much... or less! than buying an overpriced name brand bulb. And no.. you don't need to change halides as often as the manufacturers/dealers want you to.

My personal opinion: Name brand halide bulbs are a total ripoff at their price point. The so-called replacement schedule is a sham. Do you change your oil every 3000 miles? I don't. It doesn't need it, but the companies that sell the filters, oil, and do the oil changes would prefer it if you changed your oil as often as possible to maximize their profits. Many modern cars, especially if you use a synthetic or partial synthetic, can push 10,000 miles between oil changes. My car does, and the engineering spec states this.

So, as with your lights. Change them when you need to, based upon your usage. Light schedule. Livestock. Etc.

They work well as a backup light, or if you need one in a pinch. I liked my Phoenix 14k much better when I was using them. Need at least a 20k bulb for a 14k color.

For my 4th set of PlusRites I decided to get (2) 250W SE 20Ks. I absolutely love the color. I did like the 14Ks on my Advance Magnetic ballasts, but it did require a little suppliment with (2) 110W VHOs. I don't think the 20Ks require any supplimentation.

The 20K definitely give a 14K look, but don't wash any of the fish colors out like some of the other 14K bulbs have in the past with my ballasts. I typically change mine out once a year. I'm growing SPS, LPS, Softies and Clams, I love MHs.

I just recently bought a DE 250 watt plusrite to replace my old Pheonix bulb. The Plusrite will do, but it's not nearly as nice looking as the Pheonix. (I didn't expect it to be) The plusrite 20k is more of a 14K look. The Pheonix was much bluer with just a much better overall appearance.

I agree that the 20ks look more like 14k. On my last order of the 20ks, the colors were not consistent. One looked like 14k while the other was more like 10k.

I must be lucky, mine seem to always match. Even the one time when I added a bulb 4 months after the other, it only took a few weeks for the color so shift and match. These bulbs seem to shift within the first few weeks for me to their permenent color.

I have use them for around three years. The 20K 175W. Replace them every six months. Great price, color and coral growth. I also use 2 actinic VHO's and 2 Reefbrite blue leds.

I used to buy my plus rite bulbs at 1000bulbs.com 13$ a piece

I have been running 175w 14k on our reef tank for years I used to get mine at the local light supply store. I now buy them from 1000bulbs.com. They seem to have the best price for them. I just wish they had a HQI DE 150w one because I need to replace 3 of them in my coralife fixture on the other tank. By the way are the 20k 150w hqi bulbs on the bluer side? I had purchased 20k 175w se bulbs for my other tank and returned them for the 14k because they looked to blue to me. I may have not given them time to break in and I know different ballasts will fire bulbs differently.

Thank you

I've been using PlusRites for around 3-4 years now. I started with the 14Ks, but have switched to 20Ks, thanks to seeing luisgo's thread. I also run (2) VHOs, 1-Actinic and 1-Aquasun. I love the look of it. Very happy with the PlusRites and don't come close to breaking the bank, like other MHs. I replace mine every 12 months and corals and clam are doing great.

been running the 20K plusrites for 4 years with no issues, sometimes color vary a little between bulbs but never had one go out, ran Radiums previously and never saw a difference in them only difference was that I could afford to swith them out annually.
