Echinata

has anyone had experience keeping an orange crush echinata? I got a frag of one several years ago. It has grown to about baseball size. Do these things pack a bigger "sting" than other corals? I have had 2 corals (an acan and chalice) that were within 3" of this thing. It looks good one day and go look at them the next morning and they appear to be severely stung. It's not just a portion of the coral, but the entire colony. I'm just trying to figure out if this is my bully. Thanks!

Acanthastrea echinata is a very evil coral and can attack from several inches away at night. I think it will kick butt on just about anything it touches.

I have an "orange crush" and like Dave said they are EVIL. The most aggressive mussidae ive kept. I havent found anything in my tank to stand up to that bad boy = O

Dittos to what they said. I have an Orange crush also, it has killed more frags than I have.

Anyone looking for one? I'll give you a great deal.

Sounds like we need to have a death match between this and the type of hydoids I had in my old tank.

I did some rearranging in the tank over the weekend. I now have about 6" of open space around the orange crush. If that doesn't work, I'm either building a fence around it or putting it with Janies in the great deal category. :hammer:

It kinda sucks to have a bare spot in your tank though, Dave.

I mean...6"?!? yeesh.
That's huge if you have a tank that is grown out.

edit: if you need to clear out any more space and want to bring me some SPS, I'd totally be willing to help you out with that.

David, I think we should put ours together and watch them battle it out!

Have you ever seen it put out the "net-like" feelers along the substrate that grab and pull in anything in it's reach? What is the name for that "net"?

I also have the orange crush acan and it definitely with kill anything near it. Grew it out to softball size from a single mouth and as it gets bigger the kill zone gets bigger. 3" is the minimum clearance from this beast. On a side note i think i ruined the acans colors.... I had a Flourescent green galaxia get pushed too close (about baseball size) and the acan literaly ate the flesh off half the colony and now my acan has that flourescent green color splotched into that side of it's body.

WHOA...wait wait...this coral killed a galaxia? Dang. That's a seriously aggressive specimen.

I know Dave doesn't have one of these BUT I wonder how it'd fare against a bubble coral. I used to say "nothing wins against a bubble coral." Though, truth be told, my bubble coral was really huge and could probably withstand a lot more aggression than smaller ones.

I have wondered the same thing. They are quite diferent from the sweepers my other lps have.

Not sure about the bubble i can tell you mine has devoured so far, galaxia, favia, misc brain coral, and several chalice.

I have never seen its sweepers and have not heard about the "net-like" feelers. It must cover a large area since the frags that it has killed have been 3" away and it has devoured the whole thing. Seems that other corals just sting a smaller section at a time and just take out a polyp or two.
