EcoTech Marine VorTech MP40 Release Information

jnarowe - Could you try swapping dry side pads to confirm the donut solution explains the temperature differences, while keeping everything else the same.

Thanks,
Andy

That one pump of yours that is running very hot is in the highest temp possible that our pump can run at before it tells itself to cool down.

Jon- Considering the findings that I discovered with the pump you've already sent in, I'm not suprised your pumps are running hot. Let's wait until I've upgraded/repaired all of your pumps. They should all run normally soon enough.

Thanks guys. I can't swap the donut because it is glued on, but I will make a new one tonight if I get the time. I can easily say though that the one with the donut has more crazing than the currect hottest one does right now. I thik that is indeed an indication that the donut gasket is a help. Of course that doesn't solve the underlying issue of excess heat.

I am totally stoked to get the refurbed pump back from Tim. This moring I did my reef rounds and all 3 Vortechs were rattling. Tim has been messaging me daily and it seems that the weak magnets may have been what has caused all the problems I have experienced with rattling, heat, and ultimately ejections.

Also, I have seen my pumps slow themselves down many times and my assumption that is the cool down mode.

Correct.

Can someone tell me about the wet side of the pump. The part I'm talking about is where the unit does not have any spacers(where the water is pulled in), does moving this around create a different type of flow? Does that make sense?

Hi kslick,

It does to some extent. That portion of the pump is to prevent vortex's from forming. It also limits the flow into the pump from that direction, so you can point it down to prevent sand from accumulating below the pump too. Best bet is just to play with it and see what you like best, typically we recommend that it points up to prevent vortex's.

agent007,

Sorry, I haven't kept up on the thread lately. I'll get you some full shots with it. I'm going to buy a second one as I finally moved some corals around to accomodate a 2nd one. I'm in the process now of finding a good price like champion offered awhile ago :) I probably won't find it though.

Is it necessary for me to run 2 vortech's on my 7' long 200 tank. I would wonder if one would make a difference in the tank. I think I know the answer, but it is costly.
I'm in the planning stages of moving my sump into the basement, and have heard that I wouldn't need such a monster return pump if I used the vortech's.
Also, are people running their units about 3" below the surface, and if lower in the tank, does it kick up the sand bed?
Thanks.

Hi summer6-

What kind of circulation do you already have in the tank? What kind of corals are you keeping and what are the dimensions of the tank?

-Tim

I personally only run 1 and it isn't enough in my 6' tank. My second one was ordered today and hopefully here in a couple days. I have mine about 6 inches from the surface but I've been getting some massive vortexs. I'm going to try adjusting it as well.

Tim,
My tank is 84"x24"x 24", and is moving about 750 total GPH through two return lines, chiller, uv, in-line therm., 30 gal sump. I have soft and LPS corals, with about 300 lbs of live rock, and a heavier fish load.
I really need more movement in the tank. In the past I've used jets for flow, but they are a real pain.
I'm thisclose to ordering two vortech's for my tank. I'm not concerned about buying the "older" model, with the coming upgrade.
Anything you can add, please do so. BTW i'm partial to lehigh folks since my husband, and 2 bro's went there.

Glad to hear your in the Lehigh family! The university is very important to us as its where we got our start. Our place of business is only a few blocks away from campus. As I'm sure you know, its hard to stay away from this place once you've spent four years here.

Anyway, I would recommend two pumps and a battery backup to start off with. When the controller comes out you may want to add a third for even more variety. There's no real advantage to waiting until the controller comes out because of the upgrade offer that we've made. I'd put the pumps on the end of the tank, or try putting them about one third of the way in from the sides along the back wall. Placement will depend on your rock work.

^^^We were at the campus for a legacy info session since I've got a jr. thinking about schools....also forgot to mention that my brother-in-law is an alumni, and my dad's used the research facilities (chem.e.) over the years. Needless to say I was very pleased to hear about your company when we were on the campus visit - as I've been reading a lot about vortech through ice cap.
I look forward to getting a couple of these into my tank ASAP.

Hey Tim,

I'm buying a new Vortech tomorrow from Frank's Tanks. :D I finally have a back up for my beta model.

For the upgrade, will you ship out new controllers with a credit card number from us, then rebate the card when we send the "old" controller to you? Or will we need to send in our "old" controller first (and be without a pump for a couple of days)?

" ....and be without a pump for a couple of days?"
What do you think we are, savages?

We'll take a cc # as a deposit on the return of the old driver, ship out the new Driver and wait for the original with your name on it.
That way you know it's a smooth transition before sending us your Driver.

EcoTech, thanks for my new VorTech pump. Right out of the box, it worked great.

I didn't realize the motor would interfere with my power panel cabinet, so the cabinet is going to need to be moved. My hope is that the majority of the tank wiring can still reach when I move it to the wall on the right. As of now, I don't know yet.

I still need to remove the siliconed bracket the Tunze was on, but here it is. I'd really like to put another VorTech down lower, especially once the controller comes out.
