Ecotech MP40 or not - frustrating - please help...

I am putting together a 210 gallon build (6' x 2' x 2.5')

According to the Ecotech website and their MP calculator - 2 MP40s should be more than enough for the tank.

However, I have had several people tell me that 2 MP40s will not be enough.

I am more concerned about water flow and dead spots.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hands down I would go two MP60s. As someone who has used mp10/40/60 on various size tanks, IMO two mp40 is not enough. In my 180 build I'll be doing, I will be using two MP60s.

I have 2 MP40's on my 125 and I have added 3 mp10 to the back glass. Now it's enough! I really think it depends on how you set up your rocks. If the tank was empty and all you had was mushrooms growing on the bottom, then one mp 40 could do it. If you are going to fill it completely with rock than 20 mp 60s would not be enough.

IMO, there's probably not a silver bullet answer. Rock layout and where you put the power heads will come into play too like ClownMan mentioned. Though, as much as the Ecotechs cost, you'd think one would be enough. :)

i have 2 mp60 on my 265 , its a 7 foot tank with lots of rocks . i mean a lot, maybe 400 lbs of rocks and in some spots its not enough, other spots it is. i wish i could put one on my overflow box, because i want movement behind my rocks

they do cost a lot, but you have a lot of different flow patterns. also there customer support is number 1 in my opinion. my friends gryo is broken. several emails and 9 months later its still isnt fixed. my mp60 was losing connecting , 4 emails and 5 days later its fixed.

its like the corvette and lambo imo. if your looking for pure water movement nothing beats a gryo for your buck, but if your looking for top quality stuff with great customer service mp are the way to go.

ps no i dont work for ecotech, lol

The new MP40s are insanely powerful. 2 of them will handle your tank well if you have a fairly open rock pattern. If you have dense rocks the issue isn't how powerful the pumps are, but how many you have.

I have 2xMP40s on my 4' tank with a fairly open 'scape and I run them at 20%. Any more and it feels like too much.

I know that is the way I should go.

I just have a really hard time (mentally) paying $1,500 for 2 circulation pumps.

On my 265 I have ended up with MP60 on one end, MP40 on the other end and MP40 on the back. Now I have enough flow.

Personally I would not buy them used - at least not at the prices people seem to want for them. I bought a few 'headaches' before I wised up.

Yea some people I think want way too much for used gear. It should be at least 40% less than what it was new, because it's used after all.

I agree...

I looked at the Gyre - but Maxspect (Gyre) is a Chinese company (not to infer anything other than what is meant...)

The MPs (along with the Radions) seem to be the "gold" standard in our hobby...

MP's are one of those things that you pay for, but they are serviceable, they're a good product and they retain value better than most equipment. I think they are worth investing in. Most people forget too that the software programs you can run on them (mainly the ecosmart modes) are not free to develop either.

True for 99 bucks you can buy a reef link and control them over your phone. Apex is a lot more than that. I know apex has other stuff but ph probe or salinity doesn't do anything for me.

Exact same predicament. 220 and not thrilled about spending $ on 2 MP60's. may just start with one, move over my MP40, and see how it goes. Add another later if necessary. Also looking at other alternatives like Tunze and Rossmont.

The Reeflink is the one thing actually kind of bugs me. I don't understand why they don't put a wifi receiver in the drivers instead of a radio receiver (which costs more on an MP10) and then control everything through the internet. AI does it with their lights, GHL with dosers... It can't be that expensive.
