Ed Reef's '295-gallon Peninsular ZEOVit SPS tank'

PINCH MANTLE?

PINCH MANTLE?

Meanwhile, my beautiful blue Maxima is showing sign of pinched mantle!! Anyone knows any cure for it or it’s a sure goner??

Clam-pinchedmantel.jpg

I’ve been keeping it for over 2 years from about 3” in size and she is now about 5” and I really hope I don’t loose her??

Took it out and can’t find any snails of any sort at the based. Not sure if the fishes are harassing it or something else as I do got quite a few ‘known high risk’ fishes in there as nippers??

You win. ;)

Dipping a clam is one method that has worked for some, but you'd be best served to ask in the clam forum.

SUMMARY:

With the 2nd split, I think it’s about time I do a summary for those who don’t want to read through thousand of posting but for those who have the time, would encourage you to read as it’s very educational as I have taken notes of all the up/downs of setting up a Marine tank, not to mention the thousand of advice I received from everyone here in RC!

For those who IS INTERESTED to read from day 1, below are the links :p

TANK INTRO:

TANK INTRO:

The Display Tank and Canopy

This is a peninsular tank measures 200cm long, 80cm wide and 70cm high, making it hold approximately 295 gallons. It is viewable from three sides, and has Sapphire® 15mm glass on all viewable sides with a 19mm regular glass on the based and overflow.

System Profile:
Tank Size: L: 200cm x W: 80cm x H 70cm (3-side view Low Iron Glass)
Sump Size: L: 116cm x W: 70cm x H 60cm (Custom)
Type of Reef: SPS Dominated tank with some fishes and LPS
System: External Side Overflow with 200 pounds of base/ live Reef rocks
Cabinet: Iron Metal Stand with Custom made 3-side View wooden Panel

Sump Tank Design

No refugium is used in my new system as I’m running the ZEOvit method system but instead incorporate a frag tank where I can used for new frags or newly acquired fishes to be acclimatized before being introducing into the main display. (or that was the planned initially but now has been converted as a home for my frogfish)

SumpOverview.png

Sump-Topview.jpg

The sump is 116cm long, 70cm wide and 60cm high and has 4 baffles and incorporates a frag/ quarantine tank. The sump houses a 30cm x 70cm frag/ quarantine tank where new fishes or SPS frags can be first introduce before being place in the main tank. This section of the tank I call a Multi Purpose tank (MPT) I used a 60cm T5HO for the MPT

Water Quality and Filtration

I started with a 5-stage RO water filter system but eventually added a DI unit to it as I realize simply RO is not good enough. I also used approximately 100lbs. of based rocks and 100 lbs. of LR for biological filtration.

LRwithDryRocks01.jpg

I used a SSB of approximately 2-3cm deep of aragonite in the display - just enough to facilitate aquascaping rather than provide any significant biological filtration. The type of aragonite sand I used is Zeo Aragonite with a grain size between 2-3mm to avoid a sand storm. The sand is soak in RO water for over a month with regular WC until tested zero for PO4 before being place in tank.

Other Equipment:

This tank uses the ZEOVit system with a Deltec PF 601S Series Fluidised Calcium Reactor powered by Aquabee pump to maintain my Calcium needs in my tank. In addition to my Ca Rx, I also used D-D Solenoid Valve and D-D CO2 Pin Wheel Regulator to avoid a CO2 disaster and AB Brand SP3000 Peristaltic Pump as water feed to the Calcium reactor.

My reason for choosing Deltec PF 601S Series Fluidised Calcium Reactor is the ability to used RowaC+ as it’s media contains dolomite which releases magnesium as well â€"œ which if you’ve been following my thread is one of the reason why I can’t seem to bring down my Mg :rolleye1:

Similarly, no UV or other phosphate removal medium is used, apart from the used of ZEOCarbon as it’s recommended for all ZEOvit system.

For mechanical filtration I will utilize 100-micron nylon filter bags on both 1.5” overflow drainpipes and the 1” skimmer output pipe. I exchange out the 100-micron filter bags daily.

For skimmer, I used Deltec - AP 702 skimmer. This is powered by 2 x Eheim 1260 series pumps and is rated for 1500L to 2000L (396 US gallon â€"œ 528 US gallon) system, so should be more than enough to removed all those organic waste from the amount of greedy fishes I keep in my tank. I originally wanted to go with the Deltec AP902 series but the height of this skimmer is just too tall for my stand :mad2:

For my ZEOvit reactor, I used I~Aquatic's ZEOvit Reactor: IZ-818 (Up To 4L of ZEOVit) as from what I read; (this is the best reactor out there at that time that’s jam-free) and over time of used, this has been proven to be true.

This reactor is feed via a Eheim 1250 series pump rated at 1200l/h. There is also a section in my sump to place my ZEOCarbon and this should help keep water parameter in line.

Lighting

This has been a roller coaster ride for me, which I hope to resolved soon â€"œ I started off with what I thought was the best (despised all the warnings of those good reefers here in RC) 72” I Series Solaris 20K LED Illumination System as there seem to be a lot of positive feedback on the new I-series at that time and the ability to save energy and flexibility in adjusting your colors just seem to be the right choice at that time.

Then in 2.5 short months of usage, everything they say about the Solaris comes true and I was hit with one problem after another until to the point I had to return the unit back to the US.

So, I then decided to go with T5 as ability to play with colors was always my goal. I then place an order for 2 unit ATI Powermodule 10x 39w T5 and after a wait for 3 months my distributor in HK told me that he lost his distribution rights!!

Then I decided to go back to the old school for lightings and get the best with a combination of MH and T5 and just last two week place an order for the below:
- Lumen Bright SE largest reflector w/mogul and cord x 3
- Galaxy ballast 400w x 3
- Radium 400w 20k x 3
- Sunlight T5 Reflectors x 8
- IceCap Ballast 660 x 2

All should arrived before year-end and I hope to get my lighting issue fix by then

T5ComboLightingLayoutII.png

Currently holding the fort for me is my old lighting from my 180-g tank, Solarmax XBright Series 250w MH with T5HO with XM10K bulbs, which was tear down when I upgrade to this monster :D

Circulation

Circulation is provided by an Sequence Reeflo Pump - Hammerhead (18,000L/h) whose output are delivered back into the tank via two 1” return on the far end of the tank.

In addition to the returns, I have 2 x Tunze Turbelle Stream 6201 and 1 x Tunze Wavebox 6212 hidden in my overflow. However, about 3 months ago one of my 6201 and wavebox broken down and have yet to be return back to me from the distributor here.

I also added 2 Vortech MP40w to the far end of my tank for add flow. At the same time I have place orders for 2 add Gen2 Stream 6105 for more directional and random flow, which should arrived in a week’s time

Chiller/ Heater

I’m using Hailea HL-2000CHB , with build-in Chiller/ heater and is rated for tanks up to 3000L so this should keep my tank temperature constant during the hot summer and cold winter. This Hailea chiller series is a JV company with Aqua Medic.

And FINALLY the latest FTS before the split…..

For those who are interested in how I make the aquascaping, stand, etc, please check out from the beginning of the build thread!!

And for the rest, ENJOY and hope you will stick with me until the next split…….

Thanks Nick for chipping in - what makes Gigantea harder to keep compare to the other 2 carpets?? I used to have one and as long as you give them their random flow, good lighting and the sand bed with rocks, they seem happy!!

Ed,
From all reports, they just dont adapt as easily to captive environments as well as the others. But I strongly suspect that this has more to do with collection and shipping stress than anything else. They do require good random flow and strong lighting in a stable tank. Many people cant or dont provide those things as well....

I've never kept a Carpet anemone so I cant speak from experiance there. I do have three anemones right now, (an H.mag I've kept for going on 3 years, an H.crispa I've had for almost 2 years, and purple LTA I've had for 1.5 years), so I'm not exactly in the dark either. I've never kept a Carpet because I havent seen a healthy one here in St Louis Mo when I had room in my system for one. Rest assured that as soon as I see a healthy gigantea anemone and I have room in a stable system for it, I will purchase one.

Regarding Pinched Mantle:

I purchased two Crocea clams from and online vendor and within a few weeks, they both showed signs of PM. I began by doing freshwater baths to treat it. Temporarily, they worked, however, within a few weeks, the PM returned. I was doing RO baths that lasted an hour, (60 mins), and it still came back.

Finally, I treated with metronidazole in a hyposaline environment. That killed the protozoan causing the PM, but I also lost one of the Croceas. I still have the other one and that was almost 4 years ago.

Long read, (29 pages) but details on PM are here.

If you succeed in curing your clam of PM, if you dont treat all of your clams, you will re-infect your clam when you re-introduce it to your tank since it most likely was infected in the first place by one of your other clams. I would suggest treating all of your clams at the same time. I would also strongly suggest that you QT all incoming clams from here on out.

Thanks Nick - agree, getting a healthy species is very important for a carpet as they don't shipped well. Fortunately for me we get lot's of carpet anemone from the South China Sea so finding healthy species is a lot easier

Thanks Sandy :p the last split I was having Ich problem and this split I'm having clams problem

AND THIS IS WHAT I GOT FROM CHRISTMAS…

AND THIS IS WHAT I GOT FROM CHRISTMAS…

And speaking of clams…a friend of mine gave me some clams last night, as he was not doing quite a good job with them…. They are about 2-3” in size and one of them is below average condition. Not the prettiest but heeeeeeey it’s FREE.

Let’s see if I can nurse them back to health!!

Teardrop T. Maxima:
Clam1.jpg

Midnight Blue Maxima:
MidnightBlueMaxima.jpg

Unknown Clam - I think it's a Crocea:
Clam4.jpg

This is the less healthy one as I notice some parts of the mantel are torn. His mantel is also not as extended as the rest â€"œ IMO, he is a goner but I will try to see if I can save it :rolleye1:

Blue T. Crocea:
Clam3.jpg

This T. Crocea is exactly the same one I loss mysteriously a while back to some unknown pests but about half the size

Can’t get very good picture of the other two but I think the top two are Maxima, and the bottom two are Crocea!

So far three of them have good reflexes, apart from the one with torn mantel, so that’s a good sign …. I hope my fishes will keep them alone until they have a chance to fully recover.

Thanks Sandy - I hope they will recovered in my tank. 3 of them seem to ahve settle in well but the one with the torn mantel don't look too good :(
