Ed Reef's '295-gallon Peninsular ZEOVit SPS tank'

I FOUND THESE…

I FOUND THESE…

Guys…..found these LED locally available over the weekend for very CHEAP too :D

I’m so please with it as I think it will compliment what I intended to do with my lighting rack…

They have in long strips of 40cm â€"œ 80cm long as well but much more expensive. However, I think that will be too bright to be used as moonlight as I do want to keep the moonlight to a minimal or it will defeat it’s purpose.

Now I need to get some fans to cool those lights….. off to the computer mall now

I like those little lights. Let me guess - Made in China, right? ;)

WHAT GAVE IT AWAY

I was very careful in removing all sticking on the LED :D

Merry Christmas Ed, and Best Wishes in 2009 for Your Family and Reef!

First, let me congratulate you on such a fine tank display and this wonderful thread!

Just going back to your earlier lighting discussions, I run a 10' x 3' x 2.5' sps dominant reef ... it is lit with 3 x 250W Reeflux 12k in 20" LumenBright reflectors powered by Lumatek digital ballasts, 1 x 400W 'elCheapo' 14k in 20" LumenBright reflector powered by CoralVue dimmable e-ballast, and 4 x 54W T5 ProBlue powered by Icecap 660. My point here is that with the right combination of reflectors and lamp power one can achieve the right PAR values without the need for your own power station :).

Tone :)

Merry Christmas Tony and thanks for your kind words.

Agree that with today's super reflectors, a 250w can work the same or even better than a 400w. Reason I went with all 400w is cause a Radium bulb is not a true 400w bulb, but instead rated at 360w and also to compensate for par being a 20k bulb.

I do like the mix you have thou'

GETTING AWAY FOR A FEW DAYS

GETTING AWAY FOR A FEW DAYS

Guys â€"œ I’m going to take a week’s break to chilled and recharged myself, as it’s been a hectic year for me, both with my tank upgrade and at work.

As usual, will leave it to my driver to take care of my babies…

Will update when I get back…

Meanwhile, wishing everyone a “HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR to you and your families!”

I’M BACK…

I’M BACK…

Spend some quality time with my family and thought I would share some pictures non-reef related pictures of the interesting places I visited to kick start the New Year.

This ice city is Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province and every year they host this Annual World Ice and Snow Carving competition. Its’ pretty close to the Russia border, by the way, and that’s why most of the architecture is very Russian looking…

This is the oldest Russian Church….didn’t get a chance to go inside as by the time we arrived, it was already in the evening. The church is still running services, apparently.

DSC01926.jpg

The next morning, we went to the Tiger park…this park is huge and they have
more than 800 Siberian tigers rooming freely around the park.

DSC01732.jpg

In the picture, the driver actually throws out live chickens to feed them and they chickens thought they would be safe on top of the car…well, they were wrong!

And in a separated section, they have lions too….

IMG_7760.jpg

You can see how friendly they are....

You can see that the cars we travel in is well protected…but still…… apparently their teeth can puncher a 4WD tired as easily as a balloon so yeah, I didn’t take too much pictures as our car was surrounded by tigers and lions and taking pictures was not on my mind at that time hahahaha!

All of us in the cars also felt like the tigers and lions were watching us instead of us watching them as we’re the one in cages…!!

Well, after the morning ‘Safari’, we went for lunch and then follow by a visit to the Snow World to watch the Snow sculpture … yearly they have a World Snow sculpture Carving competition so it was really really fine arts in snow!!

Some pictures of unfinished work when we got there….

And some finished entries….

AND MORE….

For those who think “Why am I posting pictures of non-reef related”, well here is a picture that is….

The next picture is interesting cause it’s going into the Guinness Book of World Record as the BIGGEST Snow Carved Santa in the World

DSC01801.jpg

After dinner, we went to the Ice World â€"œ they actually build a whole city made of Ice and each year, they will carry a theme and this year’s theme for the ice city is Disneyland so my 4-year-old son had a great time…. It was also the 1st time for him to see real snow and so much ice too….

All the ice buildings have LED and a different color tubes in them. I apologized for the below average picture quality but those ice buildings are so difficult to take, and even more so when your hands are shivering in cold

Very cool entries Ed, Thanks for sharing. I don't mean to pry, but are you originally from China?

awsome pictures looks like you enjoyed you selfs.

Been following along for a while and the tank has really come along, it is very nice.

I like this....

"so Ed, how was your commute today?"

"It wasn't that bad until my car was attacked by lions and tigers"

Temperature during the day with the sun at its hottest and high above our heads is minus15 degree Celsius (5 degree Fahrenheit) and at night the temperature will drop to minus25 degree Celsius (minus13 degree Fahrenheit)

AND THEY TOLD ME I’M LUCKY AS IT’S NOT AS COLD AS LAST WEEK !

I asked them (which I later regretted) how in the world they can live in such cold weather and they show me the reason…..

Damn…this Chinese wine it’s strong and I do agree…it keeps your body warm and your cheek rosy red. After a couple of those, everything else just falls in place and you sort of blend into the whole atmosphere…

These bottles carry an alcohol vol of 45%. Mmmm I wonder if this can be used to replace vodka dosing??

We went to some interesting restaurants and bar as well…

AND MORE….

AND MORE….

The next day we went up to a nearby mountain resort and tried my hand at some skiing…. Beautiful view and mountain sky resort.

This is the venue for the upcoming 24th Winter Universiade Games to be held next month from February 18 to 28. I’m told this will be the largest Winter Universiade Games in history and they are also planning to proposed this venue to bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics…… (remember you hear it here first….)

No pictures of me in my skies as I thought you guys won’t be interested anyway!

After about half a day in the sky resort, we continue our drive to another city about 250km away called Mudanjiang to stay the night…. In this city they also have their own Snow Carving theme park and I thought their theme was more inline with this forum but their work is not as fine as those in Harbin.

Then the next morning, we drive up in my friends two Hummer cars and a Toyota Land Cruiser to a place called ‘Snow Village’ The snow there is very special, unlike other snows I’ve seen elsewhere…

DSC01903.jpg

IMG_8436.jpg

DSC01888.jpg

The snow here is a bit sticky and you can see it’s like soft cream flowing down over the rooftops. The snow here is average 2-3feet and it’s very very soft and was told that certain areas goes as deep as 4-5 feet!!

Thank god I’m not working there as can you imagine the amount of heaters you will need to add in your tank so that it don’t freeze over?? Or maybe start a cold-water reef?? Mmm… not a bad idea as I can then used much less lightings!!

Anyway, always wanted to go there but never found the time but it’s good to be back down South, where the winter is not so bone biting and my glasses don’t freeze.

Overall I must say I truly enjoy the trip and the peoples’ hospitality there is VERY WARM, unlike the weather….

Like they say…. “Cold Hands, Warm Heart”

Just wanted to share those interesting pictures but promised the next update will be reef related!!
